Hi, it's matthornb, you may be confused by the slightly different username, but it really is me.

I've been having some login problems and the only way I could get in was to make a new username.

Anyway, just here to say the contest is still on - and we can keep discussing it.

It's now March 25th, and the contest deadline is getting closer.

No entries yet but I hope that some of you are working on making tutorials and that I'll have something to judge in May.

Ok, welcome *b2,
I can confirm you there will be at least one tutorial,
and I have chosen a subject already.
It will be around "unwrapping", because there is a lag of info around that subject.
(I still am a beginner myself in it.)
I will try to explain how to do a proper unwrap of "a rope with a knot in it "
Basicly the rope is nothing more then a low poly tube, but it's the knot which makes it a little complex.
I will provide the blend file, the texture and explanation.
Those wonderfull Worlds are called " Ages" , because that is what it takes to build one.

And I was thinking about making a tree-making tutorial. :geek:

a texture database certainly is very usefull! There are many databasesaround, but still it remains difficult to find the right one.
Often making them yourself is quicker then endless searching.

I saw this thread a bit late, because the title didn't give me the right idea about what is discussed here.

As Chacal already mentioned - but I think he forgot to mention the URL: We already have a working texture (and models / sounds) database and server, which was made especially for the needs of the Guild of Writers.
http://www.texturu.org/

It seems to be not used very frequently though - I assume it's because it is not filled with very much content right now. People seem to be pleased by other resources like cgtextures to get their textures from. And I must admit that I lost a bit interest in updating and maintaining it in the past, because it was a lot of work to get this running, and then getting the impression that nearly nobody seems to care about it.

But if there is still a need for such a repository, I would suggest we continue to fill it with content, and I'm sure it will grow.

I have gigabytes of textures from around the world that I want to upload. I've just been too lazy.

Actually there is already a great tutorial for tree making in blender:
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:T ... _Poly_Tree

Personally it get me other the "learning blender threshold", and I even suggest that it should be watched by everyone who's begging learning Blender (even before reading "Noob to Pro").

Thanks for pointing that tutorial out to me, Egon--I'm downloading it now, and it looks great. :) I was planning to cover a similar-looking technique as part of my tutorial, but now I think I'll just put in a link to these videos and then go straight to the more-difficult-to-learn-but-less-work-intensive-once-you-know-what-you're-doing as well as the high-poly-tree-suitable-for-billboarding-or-memory-gulping-gorgeous-graphical-excess means of tree-creation. :P

And tachzusamm, I didn't even know we had a texture server. I have bundles of textures that I've been keeping in a box.net account, wishing that there was an easier in which to share them. This will be perfect. :)

Oh...
There was a time, rather long ago, when it was announced to be down for maintenence, indefinately and I can't recall anyone mentioning it went back up -- maybe people assumed the worst...
Either way, we need to make people aware of its existence, somehow...

/me has got a small number of industrial noises to upload, once I get them cut up into neat-ish sections... :7

Already started a new thread as a reminder of it's existence.

Interesting. Glad to see people are preparing entries for this contest.

I'm also intrigued by the models/textures/sounds archive, I didn't know that such a GoW archive existed but now that I do I may have to submit some textures and models to it. :D
