I'd like to see someone point out where coders have acted in a way that harms the GoW. The Imager hack was repaired by GoW coders. The Bahro thing was apologized for. The "message redacted" thing is a peaceful protest of the way Cyan has mistreated the people who have helped them. Frankly, JWPlatt, I think your posts are here just to incite people. You show all the signs of a concern troll, whilst claiming to be offering PR advice. I don't think people are as immature as you make them out to be. There won't be some vast tarnishing of the Gow's reputation because someone does something the community doesn't like. Anymore than all shard owners were/are demonized because Dhelayan is one.

If you choose (individually) a benevolent and positive term, you'll have to behave and represent yourselves that way or you'll be liars. If you choose a name for yourselves that can confuse, confront, or is sarcastic or fecetious, you'll remove the requirement to elevate your behavior, be part of the community and communicate well. If you don't like the community, you can choose to be witches and behave however you want to behave. You'll have all the freedom you want except the freedom to complain the community doesn't like you. In other words, chosing a word like "developer" won't demean "developer." It will demand the associated behavior or you demean youselves. In other, other words, people tend to live up or down to the terms applied to them or give to themselves.

We are not here to rally. We are not here to gain acceptance or be benevolent. We are not here to be sarcastic, facetious, or try to trick anyone.

We are here to mod Uru and create ages. Anything outside of that is unimportant. As an artist, I don't create things to make everyone else happy. I make things because I find them interesting and fun. If others enjoy my creation too, that's great. :D

BAD, I am still curious, and I'm NOT trying to pick a fight or anything like that AT ALL here, but who exactly do you mean when you say "We"? Other than yourself, who else specifically are you speaking for?

I agree with some points in your posts made in the topic so far, not all of them however. Yet, I still would prefer to know; Who you are speaking for? I want to put this into proper perspective.

And if this post does come off to you as insulting, then I apologize in advance. :)

I tend to agree with a lot of BAD's posts... so I could say his we is my we, at least in this case.

To elaborate a bit on that, BAD's we seems to me to be saying something about the purpose of the "Guild" which in this case is really just this forum. Is this forum here to be accepted or whatever else he said? No, it's here to distribute knowledge about writing ages.

All of the above.

I use the term we to mean myself and others who agree with my sentiment in the post. There is also a hint of me speaking for the the GoW group but not officially in any capacity. The idea I have when writing is that most members of the GOW feel the same way I do, but I in no way intend to speak for other individuals so my posts get knocked down to what I said in the first sentence.

So there's a vacancy for a Guild of Sarcastic Tricksters? :D

Since I don't have the ability to do either of the two things BAD mentions (mod Uru or make Ages), I guess I'm not in his we. Whether JWPlatt has a point or not is up to those of you who are. There's a lot to be said for not caring what others think of you--it makes things simpler. There's also a lot to be said for the other approach, for wanting to be seen as a valuable part of the larger community by people who come to it fresh. You bear a noble name (when you decide to use it again) and you do live up to it.

While RAWA's communication has cleared the air to a degree, it did not address the question I really wanted to know the answer to, i.e. a clear statement from Cyan as to their attitude to the reverse engineering of Uru:CC. I still think this is because any clear statement they could make would, for reasons which may not be legal but may be just as binding on them, have to be in the negative, and they don't want to do that if they can possibly avoid it by saying nothing. But, of course, this is still arrant speculation on my part.

EDIT: and just in case anyone was wondering, I didn't want to know the answer because I wanted it stopped. I don't. I love Drizzle. I wanted to know the answer because I wanted to know the answer--like everyone else, I'm fed up with speculating in a vacuum.
