I travel a lot, and I would not call "not to be able to play my steam-singleplayer-games without internet acces" a benefit.

Two words - Steam Overlay.
Slightly longer - I don't need to alt tab to chat, and to browse the internet for stuff. And alt tabbing is a pain in the ass, and without the steam overlay I have to do it a /lot/.

It isn't cheaper, and its not really inherently worse. The DRM is a problem, but, uh, I'd rather DRM, and knowing that the content distributor isn't going to play a prank on me and block me from downloading my stuff - just because they went out of beta. Steam hasn't done that - GOG.com /has/.
