To love/know with the mind

Postby Niwarori » Fri Aug 19, 2011 6:34 am

I look for the page that I can check.
I translated "Marriage Notebook" and had a question.

1. D'ni word taygahn・・・Had better this standardize words?
#2 "to love with the mind"
#18 (to know with the mind)
In the MYSTlore, it is written as "love with the mind".

2. #16 Original Text :and visa versa -> My thought : and vice versa ??

...For these reasons, I want the checklist within ULP that I can confirm the words of the doubt.

I think you could write it as テイガーン just so people understand the pronunciation of it. I think the meaning of the word is described two different ways because there is no English equivalent. It implies that there are other D'ni words for loving or perhaps different levels of love. In English we say "I love you with my whole heart.' Other human cultures say things like "I love you with my whole liver." But for the D'ni, it's "I love you with my whole mind."

I suspect, also, that part of it has to do with knowing somebody so well. "I know you like the back of my hand, and I love you because of it" might be the best English equivalent.

I think it's important to get the translation to convey accurately the writer's intention here. If writing "to love with the mind" sounds weird in Japanese, write what you think best conveys the idea.

And, remember, others are always able to comment on your translation and suggest their own. Perhaps if you're not completely sure about your translations, put that in the comments and let others help you later.
