Maintainer Training ages

Postby Trylon » Wed Nov 28, 2007 12:00 am

A while ago a representative of the Guid of Maintainers posted this:
One of the things that we have been talking about is having the tools to implement this type of training, the ULM (Uru Library Manager) being the key tool at this point in time. However, we have also been discussing the idea of having Training Ages available that are specifically designed to train people. As of now we have 3 main ideas of these Ages;

Bug Training Ages: For teaching people how to spot bugs or problem areas.
Copyright Training Ages: For teaching people to recognize Copyright violations.
Essay Training Ages: For teaching people how to simply report on and critique Ages that have no bugs or copyright violations.

Now, my question to everyone here, is:
Who is willing to show them we can do something? Hands up please!

They're not asking for complex or perfect ages, just for training ages - they even want buggy ones :)
You can even include copyright violations, ain't that cool?

If anyone has an old project lying around, consider donating it.
Or better yet, it would be a perfect opportunity to do something with a practice age.

List of projects:
Bug Training ages:
- Trylons 4th age
- Jojon's test age
-

Copyright training ages:

Essay Training ages:

Hey I have an Age so buggy it'll make your computer crash and burn! How cool is that? :D
Seriously though. I find that Training Ages idea really cool. What kind of bugs exactly would be needed? There are just too many of them to put them all in a single Age. Should we narrow it down to a precise list or could any bug be included?

Here is an idea for an Age: it would be a tropical island and all kinds of weird bugs would happen on it: whenever a plane pass over it it'll crash down, mysterious clouds of dark smoke would form, and polar bears would appear out of nowhere.. Also you'd have to press on a button every five minute to prevent the Age from collapsing. We could call it the Lost Age. Heck, I'm sure we could easily even have a copyright violations or two in there..

Heh :)
No problem.

My problem is that I constantly end up with broken versions of PyPRP while adding new features :)

I'll go and give them a broken age when I get things straight though :)

Probable bugs: I'll include
- Broken physical
- Annoying Panic Link regions

Hi all,

Part of the "Bugs" that we are looking for are things like untidy mesh's, buttons that when pressed perform their action but in the process also perform a physical impossibility or two. Things like opening a door by shoving it halfway out the roof, or into a wall but misaligned so it sticks out here and there.

Missing collisions, extra "Invisible" collisions, slippery slopes, one way viewable textures when you can see both sides, missing panic planes, ect........

Anything that is a bit of a common Noob Age building thing. <We are not looking for quality>

What if we made a room that was a "bug room" and that various versions of it (perhaps even like the "time travel" of Ahnonay) have different bugs. That way, there's some continuity in the room. In other words, the maintainers don't need to get aquainted with their surroundings; they can just go right to bug-hunting.

On the other hand, getting adjusted is a key skill, so...

Well, just an idea! :)

Ah, looks like there may be a use for my silly little testing age after all. For starters, I've got a climbing region that's slighly too far away from the top ledge, so if you don't start walking right away, after reaching the top, you plunge down between the wall and the ladder - would that qualify as a "good" bug? :)
