You might want to be careful who you're insulting there, being that I happily play games like World of Warcraft and Team Fortress 2, and am quiet happy in my life.

As mature, well, I'm not above laughing at fart jokes in Family Guy.. ;)

But no I'm not kidding, but then I don't assume for one moment that violence = WoW violence, instead I understand the canon Cyan set out with Uru, and am taking the stories of murder, slavery and genocide that are rife within the D'niverse and expanding some of those concepts in my own Ages.

This attitude is getting really tiresome. C'mon people, a little openness to ideas? Not stomping on everyone's ideas because they don't fit your magical preconception of what Uru Ought To Be, even when such preconceptions are often directly contravened by actual Cyan storyline and content? When and If we get a truly "Open" Uru, people are going to be able to do more or less whatever they want with it, and we're all going to have to deal with that, and it's looking right now like a lot of people aren't going to be able to.

I thought that's what traditional MMOs were for. There are a million of them out there: let the rest of us have at least one online gaming universe free of the caustic social interaction that World of Warcraft and all its subsequent clones have caused. No worries, I insult ALL World of Warcraft players equally...I'm not singling you out... ;)

Fair enough. But don't be shocked if you discover a majority of MO:UL players have no interest in your "ages". There is a reason a lot of us participate in Uru instead of other MMOs. Trust me, there are a lot of games out there that are more polished, more stable, and have more fluid gameplay. It's the same reason a lot of people still play Ultima Online after 12 years. In the words of UO-playing friend, "it aint the graphics".

Personally, I'd be pretty astounded if there was a huge influx of MMO gamers into MO:UL. Given the prevalence of ADHD in that crowd, I highly doubt most of them could get through an age in MO:UL without imploding.

You're talking to someone who has been in this community for 12 years now, I'm well aware of how it works and why people are here.

I don't build my Ages for the majority, I build my Ages for myself and for those who like my stuff, and I know who they are. I make no attempt to trying to please everyone.

I can think of three reasons, none of which have to do with lack of violence:

  • Uru is based on the Myst/D'ni canon. Obviously, no other MMOG can claim this. Roughly the same applies to LOTR fans playing LOTRO and Star Trek fans playing, well, STO.
  • Uru's concept is quite different from that of most MMOGs, such as by focusing more on exploration and less on grind-like tasks.
  • There is no need for a third reason.

Furthermore, the existing D'ni canon is hardly free from violence. Myst subtly alludes to it. The Book of D'ni portrays a war. Uru has featured slavery and barbaric prisoner treatment from day one. Tweek isn't entering new territory here. I also can think of few people who have invested as much time in understanding the canon as he has.

For lobey-dobey MMOGs, perhaps Hello Kitty Online provides the more suitable experience.

Maybe before accusing others of making games too violent, you should take a long hard look at your prejudices.

It's pretty naive to assume that Tweek means to create the kind of place that you describe, especially if you have seen the Ages and other materials that he has produced so far. Plus, the D'ni lore and the stories of Myst and Uru are full of violence and turbulence, even if the player doesn't exercise any of it themselves. As far as I can judge from having seen his previous work, the violence Tweek means has to do with lore and story, not player combat.

It's just as naive to think that WoW is full of the kind of people you describe. Every community has different kinds of people in it with different personalities, including varying degrees of maturity. This also goes for the Myst/Uru community.
