This will result in damaging fights and splits if this happens. I will personally guarantee that.

I don't get what you mean or why you mean it.
For cying out loud people, we're just talking about and IC site with a list of a number of current ages.
No one said it has to be the master list or the only list.
No one proposed forking the list at alcugs.
It's an IC list and desciption of a number of ages (probably not even all ages, ok).
Again, no offense meant to anyone, I just got a bit worked up about all the fuzz.

And for some good news:
Aloys wrote:I have just emailed the owner of the .org domain (Alexander Davis) to ask him if he has any intention of renewing it and if he would be ok with us potentially taking it. We'll see if anything comes out of it.
He just replied saying he has no intention of renewing the domain and wishes us good luck with our new site.

So if we want to use it we can; do we?
I agree
www.guildofwriters.org would make for a nice IC site address.

I think it's a great idea.
In that case we should try to get it transferred to us tomorrow. IIRC that will automatically renew it. Otherwise it will still take 65 days before we can register it.
I don't mind paying the fee. Ask him for the transfer key and I'll try to get it.

I think if the GOW IC site keeps their list strictly IC then there will be no conflict. The ooc portion of the GOW does not require an age list as the one on Alcugs Wiki is more than complete and useful. We don't need to have this conflict if we keep the IC and OOC parts of this group from bleeding into each other to much. The two sides of the coin complement each other, but do not impede the others existence.

about a domain name fo the IC site.
In addition to guildofwriters.org, we could also take something like
"gowincavern.com" to emphasize on the IC part. (until next week I can still get it for free for a year, same goes for any .com address).

That's good news about the domain - each time I had to enter it manually, I thought "that should say org". guildofwriters.org (or whatever domain name we choose) should then definitely have a prominent link to the OOC page though, as people will enter that page via google and might not realize this IC/OOC separation.
A site like the GoW should not have a dependency on other websites for vital information. If only to avoid confusion for new visitors.
Some prominent links to the Alcugs Age list (like we already did it with Drizzle and the Offline KI) can easily lead people back and forth from one site to the other. As pointed out above, the separation is not completely arbitrary. GoW is also relying on other sites for some more or less vital tutorials (links to GoMa), or for the SVN of the GoW projects. If this was about the forums, and people would have to register at two places for age-building business, I would agree. But after all, the Alcugs projects relevant for writers have a subforum here, just the documentation is stored elsewhere.
The one thing coming to my mind to improve the situation would be to mark outdated information in the Alcugs wiki as such, so that it is less confusing to newcomers.
I think if the GOW IC site keeps their list strictly IC then there will be no conflict. The ooc portion of the GOW does not require an age list as the one on Alcugs Wiki is more than complete and useful.
And what is so fundamentally different about an IC age list than about an OOC age list? It's all only about the style the information is written in, and the Alcugs wiki just explains what can be found in the age. I don't see a violation of IC there. Sure, it has cross-links to OOC information. What about an "IC" list that just fetches the Alcugs site in background and use the content itself, replacing "Walkthrough" by "Exploration report" and "Author" with "Restorer" if this age is IC-wise not written by its OOC-author? This still leaves the information in one place, while keeping the IC style. I have to admit I never really got into that role playing though.

I put in a bid for "guildofwriters.org"; so, we'll see what comes of that. If I get it, I'll be happy to point it to whatever site you all decide on.

Aloys and I are already working on it Robert.
Your help is appreciated, but unnecessary.

Heehee! Are you guys accidentally bidding against each other?
Anyway, something that fetches and displays the official UAM Age pages would be acceptable to me. Perhaps that would be a good compromise?
