Clearly, if Cyan is going to do their own servers... they have to think about money.

After Myst V was launched, much of Cyan's staff got layed off. This was due to monetary issues as well as overall funding for Cyan.

They'd have to charge us roughly 15$ a month or so in order to keep:

A) Uru running
B) Uru updating
C) Storyboards working
D) Cyan well funded
and E) Cyan workers compensated

If all those are met, I'm sure we'll see Uru Live come back again.

Nek'rahm wrote:Well, look at Kahlo

Was in Stage 4 before it was Suspended. Screenshots of the Age even exist.

If they start up MOUL again (probably at Season 2, not Season 1 again) then I'm sure Kahlo will be an Age we'd visit soon.

Kahlo was completely scrapped and was running on plasma 1 at the time the screenshots were done.
Given the nature of the Age it would take a fair old while for it to be built so I wouldn't anticipate seeing it right off the bat.

Kadish itself took 6 months and that doesn't involve flying around on the back of animals.

I have no idea what the current arrangements between Cyan and Gametap are, but what I get from Gametaps message to us Cyan is still working for them though it's not on MO:UL. It says something about still being partners I believe.

So if Cyan keeps getting somesort of steady revenue from stuff they do for Gametap then hosting by Cyan could be a real option. Maybe they are even being comissioned something new by Gametap.

Cyan receives some income from the other titles on GameTap such as realMyst, Riven, and Spelunx.

I was just thinking.... last year we had a server migration of MO:UL. Even then I had a strange feeling about this. My suspicions now are that we have already moved away from Gametap serverwise and that Cyan has something in place already. Gametap saying the servers will be down in 6o days, might just mean that they will not available through the Gametap client.

:?: Here's a post by Chogon talking about the move in December:

And here's one clarifying about who owns the servers:

They seem to contradict each other...

Uh yah, it contradicts big time. In the first thread he said:

We are not on the GameTap servers (or Turner's either).

Then in the other thread, talking about the shut down, he said:

A note to those who like to find meaning in every word: Yes, I did say "the GameTap MO:UL servers". Please don't consider that as any glimmer of hope. I was just being specific as to what will happen.

Uhm, the way I read it with those two statements, is that, no, GameTap does not own the actual physical servers that MOUL is located on.
However, the way we get there, is through GameTap, even when we don't use the GameTap interface, but load MOUL up on it's own. That would account why GD eventually said that it didn't mater whether or not we logged on without going through the GameTap menu, because GameTap still sees us logging on.

Throwing the swtich to cut it off, simply means that, if you try to log on to MOUL with either way right now, it won't happen, because the road to it will be closed off.

Now, if Cyan does get serious about what Rand said: "Looking into running it on our servers" I would imagine that we would have to download some sort of update that would change the Urulauncher, and we would be going down a different road to get to their servers.

Of course this is all speculation, but good point Robert.

I don't know anything about game engines and I'm brand new to these forums, plus I've only skimmed through this thread...but doesn't blender itself come with its own game engine? Could that be used?

Kinda seems sketchy that they would be soo... unspecificly precise on their timing.

Hmm :)

The Auth server is linked to GameTap accounts. Even if Cyan finds a way to continue on their own it is unlikely that we can keep our progress, which is also linked to those accounts. I think that is what is meant by "GameTap MOUL servers". As opposed to the potential future Cyan MOUL servers for which they run their own auth server. These could be the same physical machines but still everybody will have to start from scratch again.
