That. Plus:

SFW?
I travel a lot, and I would not call "not to be able to play my steam-singleplayer-games without internet acces" a benefit.
It would help if you got your facts straight, there /is/ an offline mode.... you were saying? =)

1) Why on Earth would You do such a terrible thing? (No meant to offend: I'm just geune interested)
2) Personally I find Steam client just awful, and cluncky.
Two words - Steam Overlay.

Slightly longer - I don't need to alt tab to chat, and to browse the internet for stuff. And alt tabbing is a pain in the ass, and without the steam overlay I have to do it a /lot/.
Egon wrote:In the end: Yes I use Steam, becouse there are some games not avaible anywere else. But then You compere GOG to Steam, I thin k that Steam is cheaper, but becouse it is worse
It isn't cheaper, and its not really inherently worse. The DRM is a problem, but, uh, I'd rather DRM, and knowing that the content distributor isn't going to play a prank on me and block me from downloading my stuff - just because they went out of beta. Steam hasn't done that - GOG.com /has/.

And, while the steam version of uru is not terribly brilliant (Cyan's fault, not Valve's ;) ), and i'd recommend the gog.com version to anyone (actually, thinking about it, I wouldn't anymore - not after this stunt (note that I've gifted two friends copies of uru cc via gog.com, already, which I don't intend to do anymore)) - such subjective things are the purchaser's business - not yours, and not mine. HOWEVER - The issue at hand is that it /works/. Which is, again, different to what dustin is saying.

It would help if you got your facts straight, lots of games and mods /don't/ work in an offline mode (for example: didn't You saw link wich I posted?)

I can think of a couple which wouldn't work - They use 3rd party DRM. ;) Which isn't Steam's fault.

As for that particular post - never /ever/ had that happen - and those screenshots look suspicious. - I /have/ had the steam servers are too busy - but not the rest of it. - there's also the chance that they had automatic updates turned on, and that software had an update pending. ;)

And, indeed, it looks like an update could well have had something to do with it - GMod had an update around then. =P

EDIT: note that my father runs his games all in offline mode, and never has a problem. ;) So, I'd like you to /try/ it, before you mouth off about it. =P

EDIT2: and, aha, someone did indeed point out that updates /were/ the issue, in the comments thread. - Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair - not with Steam.

Sorry, please do some looking into the issue - and get your facts straight /again/. You were saying?

Then don't buy from Steam. You have successfully opted out of the "DRM." It was impossible to opt out of the gog.com stunt.

Also, that blog exhibits PEBKAC. I have played tons of games (including Gmod) in offline mode. It worked for me just now (since I was curious).

If GOG had actually made it impossible to play your games whilst they did their PR stuff, then I'd probably be far less amused than I am. But all GOG did was prevent new purchases or downloads of old purchases for what, three days? Daft but not fatal for my Riven cravings...

In any case, it's over and done with now. If they do it again then I'll hate on them, but until then I'll keep an eye on them when I've got a few quid and a long day!
