I believe that even 3DS Max 2008 is too recent. I seem to recall reading that Cyan used 3DS Max 7 since Myst V.

There is some backward compatibility in Max regarding plugin suport, but I don't know to what extent. Hopefully plugins written for version 7 should run fine on 2009.

I plan on getting the plugins transfered to Truespace, which I find much easier to use. I started a thread about the newest version which the company is giving out for free.
TrueSpace and Harry Potter. like Peanut butter and jelly.

Jishin, I completely agree on you. when someone finally got the hang of Max, hopping over to blender feels very odd. I also can't wait for that plugin.

Which version of 3DSMAX the plugin is written for is still one of the outstanding questions, but I would imagine that with the source, the plugin could be ported/upgraded/downgraded to other versions of 3DSMAX with a little effort. Of course, I've been wrong before, so we'll have to wait and see. 8-)

You do realize that with mature software like 3ds max, the API is somewhat stable and won't change unless there are some really major changes made, thus, I really don't see why it won't work on several versions of Max. And as Marten said, it will be somewhat trivial to fix issues with other versions of Max.

According to the Wikipedia article on 3DS Max (which may or may not be accurate) plugins written for 7 are compatible with 8, but not 9, 2008, or 2009.

If the information provided by Paradox in this thread is correct, it may prove difficult to recompile the plugin.
On that note, does anyone here own or have access to a copy of the 2009 SDK? I only have access to a copy of Design 2009, unfortunately.
