I have received a PM with a suggestion that I believe worthy of discussion.
RealXtend
I've had a quick look but it does look like an option. The Wiki for RealXtend has two stubs one for importing Blender and One for importing Studio3DMax unfortunately they are just that stubs with no content.
RealXtend has Avatar creation and while it appears not to have the same look/feel as an Uru age it may be possible to bend it to our needs should there be a decision to go that way.
I have looked at a few suggestions in the past and to me this one looks the best so far.
In a perfect world we would have used the Alcugs development if it was still available within the rules (I believe this is blocked on two counts 1)reverse engineered and 2)Subject to the authentication server shut down).
I remain open to suggestions.
A serious proposal to Cyan. Can WE get MORE up and running?
Re: A serious proposal to Cyan. Can WE get MORE up and running?
RealXtend looks interesting. Though I don't like the fact that it uses Ogre (this show that the people didn't want to build the stuff from the ground up).
What is going to happen we want our old Uru content in there? Importing and copying Cyan's ages and textures for an engine other than Plasma is a HUGE No-No.
Oh well, if you want to do that feel free.
I'm sticking with my Uru ages for now.

I don't know enough (anything) about Ogre to comment on that front. But using Plasma does sound like common sense.
If it was not for the accusation of reverse engineering I would fall for Alcugs running with a cracked authentication server. The mental investment in Blender looks far to much to waste.
I am just kicking ideas around here.
I just can't work out the downside of letting the fans run UU under licence for spare cash. What can they loose that's not already in the public domain hell if it only pays for their pizza then they won't starve.

For clarity, RealXtend is a spinoff/fork of OpenSimulator (a rebuild-from-scratch of the Second Life simulator code).
I believe OGRE is being used because the other alternative for OpenSim as a whole - ODE - isn't holding up just yet.
That's all I'll say on this subject for now; I'm tracking OpenSim for other reasons, but not through that 'grid' fork.

J'kla, all of the stuff needed to run a UU server has already been documented. I don't think you need to run a cracked anything. You could probably just run Alcugs as-is. It should come packed with an auth written by the Alcugs team (no Cyan source in there).
Ask around. I don't know much about the Alcugs server only that I could never get it to run after compiling on Linux and I could never get it to compile on windows and it needs a few gigs of server-space.

A few gigs?
I guess you let it run without removing the logfiles then
The board for the alcugs server is this one, by the way: http://forum.almlys.org/

Re: A serious proposal to Cyan. Can WE get MORE up and running?
So is Alcugs viable as a place to run shared fan written content?
Re: A serious proposal to Cyan. Can WE get MORE up and running?
Yes, I know for a fact that it is viable.
The most noticable problem is with age ownership though. All ages on an Alcugs shard are globally owned (well, that's the simple explanation anyway).
EDIT:
We could ofcourse always try to ask Cyan for permission to run an alcugs shard to run Fan Content on.

One day I ran through the cleft for the fiftieth time, and found that uru held no peace for me anymore.

Globally Owned?
Re: A serious proposal to Cyan. Can WE get MORE up and running?
Public - as in: one instance, accessible to everyone.
