It's going to be interesting to see just what we get and when we get it -- there's been quite a bit of waiting already for the 3DS plugin... :7

I must say I'm somewhat ambivalent about tampering with Cyan-originated content, should permission to do that be included in the deal. On one hand, it would be great to see things live up to their potential, coming to life like "never" before and better tied together - GPNM's words above are intriguing. On the other hand, despite their tied hands, part of me would really like to see canonacity (is that a proper word?) remain with the original planners and kept away from fan-fic writers. :7 It's good to talk, apparently - maybe there's a middle road?

I wonder what will happen when this hits Slashdot - no doubt there will be the usual barrage of the "It's old and dead, let is rot." comments, that I, as one of the few remaining actual users of old Amiga computers, am all too familiar with, but maybe we could also have a little influx of good technical and otherwise creative people, who like the prospect of a Linux/other_OSS_platforms-native decent multiplayer game.

If you're refering to the shard, I'd be more than happy to pass along the word to the admin :)

Heh, no need. Lets say I'm involved in something as well. I believe there were a lot of shards still running underground. ;)

To clarify: The purpose of the simple conversion tab in Drizzle is so that those Ages *don't* have to be on the dataserver. This way you can ensure that the users have the installation of the various games, and their files indeed come from there.

That's easy we put on loads and loads of them on torrent and set up a rumour that one of them contains malicious code

Already I'm seeing efforts to put structure and order into this open-source movement.
Which is the surest way to kill it.

What we DON'T need is a clear separation of tasks between Guilds, with a system of approval, and zealots watching over anyone straying too far from canon, or investigating possible infringement of Cyan's IP.

GoW making Ages and running a server, sure. GoM testing Ages, sure. A Guilds server running only Ages approved by GoW and GoM, no way.

Why not Chacal?

By open sourcing this, we've been handed a way to do it....what ever the way people want to do it.

There can be shards of complete anarchy.

Or your way.

Or another way completely.

That's the beauty of it. There are so many ways that it can (and will) be done. There's nothing to stop anyone from doing just about anything they want.

Like me: I'm going to let everyone else decide what they want to do and go back to making my Ages and Tutorials....

Then I'll come back and go: "Hey, here's an Age. Who wants to test and who wants it?"

I would see the guild server running ages to gain approval and that kind of implies that at that time they still do not have the said approval.

Yes the main all singing all dancing publicly available this is the real I am here all original Shard. Now that's a different matter.

The only reason any kind of control will be put in place is because the servers will be run by people investing actual time effort and money into it. That means that if there is something those people don't want, it won't be on the server.

If we do an inter-guild server bank, then that means everyone who is affiliated with the guilds who join the movement will have a say into what is or isn't on that server.

I can tell you from experience. If a server is not policed well, you get a hacked vault and your basically put at the whim of how good your back ups are. Thing will HAVE to be controlled in order to maintain a healthy stable server. That means no hacking at all ever on the server without the expressed permission of all who are invested in it.
