Writers at Mysterium 2008?

Post by BladeLakem »

Hey there, Mysterium 2008 is going to be in Burlington, MA this year, July 25-27. The committee is starting to plan events and panels for Mysterium. We were wondering if the Writers would like to do anything at Mysterium - host an event, have a panel, teach a class or something.

Any Writers going to Mysterium?

You know, I always thought it would be cool to have an age creation seminar at Mysterium. Someone would walk up to the Writer's booth/table and pick out a terrain, a sky, foliage and a structure (from some pre-fab models), and the Writer would whip up an age for them right then and there, explaining what they're doing along the way. The Writer could burn the Blender file and textures and age files to a CD (along with the latest copies of Blender, PyPRP Plugin and ULM), and the person walks away with their very own age. It could be done in 20-30 minutes; people could sign up for a time to avoid the wait; and we could have 10-15 new ages created over the weekend.

I'd love to attend this year's Mysterium, but even though it's the closest to me that it's ever been, I still don't think I'll be able to get away or to afford it.
Can we rebuild it? Yes, we can - here's how.

I would LOVE to have done exactly what Robert suggested, it would be cool as heck.

But, as I said in the Maintainer's Forum, while me and my wife had planned on attended back when it looked like it was going to be held in Atlanta, when they suddenly moved it up there to Burlington, they moved it out of our reach for now. Still don't know why they did that.

Anyway, It would have been cool to of helped do what Robert is talking about, but I'm afraid I cant' get all the way up there.

(I remember suggesting exactly that last year, and I'm still waiting for someone to reply to the topic.. :? )
Although that may not be the best strategy given last year's failure I will suggest the same thing I did last time:
Even if no one among us can go we can still create something to be there.. We can make a video, we can make some Age and have it be demonstrated there, we create presentations of any kind.. All we need is some kind sould (anyone not necessarily a Writer) to go there and start the presentation for us..
July is in 3 months.. that's plenty of time for us to put something together.
The only question we need to answer for now is: what do we want to talk about? Do we want to get technical and show the process & tools used to create Ages? Do we want to demonstrate the Ages that have already been released? Do we want to talk about the future? (assuming Cyan and GT have made some firm announcement before that day). Typically presentations are around or under 30 minutes long, that's enough time to show a number of things.

I like Robert's idea, but I don't know how easy/difficult it would be to do, that will depend a lot on the events the commitee has in mind..

If we do decide to do a video, I'm quite talented with motion graphics and After Effects. I would be willing to do up a nice intro and outro with some matching bumper slates. That is if your interested. ;)

Sorry you can't make it, andy.

As for why Burlington, when the committee held the official poll on where it should be, the Boston area won by a significant margin. *shrug*

Ah, I stand corrected. My wife just informed me that what were were seeing was a discussion thread, not the poll.

It happens. I'm sure that there are a lot of our fellow European brothers and sisters that wish that it was over in Europe this year, especially with the closing of MOUL. Having been to Dragon-Con many times, and some other con's down in Florida, ya just can't make them all! :D

I have an idea... if possible.

Some time in the future, we should have mini-laptops. except you open em up sideways like a book. This way, we could creatively pass out and advertise new Ages that have Writers attention.

I'm gunna try to go, but it looks like I won't...

I won't be able to go until it's a bit closer to home. I can't afford to fly halfway across the country (yet). Maybe when I'm a multimillionaire after mellenia of working as a teacher in podump Georgia.</sarcasm>

Hey, Blade:

You and the other Mysterium folks are probably trying to finalize the schedule. Let's at least work out the details to that end.

How much time do you need to fill with a Writer presentation? And which day has room left for such a presentation? At the very least, I think we should be able to provide a half-hour video of the ages we've produced so far. If none of us are able to make it in person, you could at least present the video. If we are able to make it, then we could either add another half hour for an age creation seminar, or have it done as a one-on-one demo independent of the schedule.
Can we rebuild it? Yes, we can - here's how.
