Stupid "can't remember how" question

Post by Kierra »

Been awhile since I had to do this one:

How do you rotate the local Y axis?

I'm making a bench you can sit on, but it's facing the opposite way. I need to rotate the local Y axis 180 degrees (without rotating the object!) but it seems I've forgotten how :?

doh!

As far as I know there's no direct way to rotate object axis in Blender (which doesn't make sense)
So you have to go to edit mode, select all, rotate 180° around the Z axis get out of edit mode and then rotate the object around the axis 180° in the oppostie direction (ie -180). That way your axis will rotate but the object will stay in place.
Make sure to keep the manupilator displayed to check the Y axis. (although it isn't displayed while you manipulate the object, which also doesn't make sense).

Is the axis correctly rotated now? (the green one on the manipulator)

Press [R] to enter rotate mode
then press [X],[Y] or [Z] for the rotation axis.

then simply type [1][8][0][ENTER] to enter a fixed 180 degree rotation around aforementioned axis.

EDIT:
Nevermind the fool who didn't read well enough to understand what the problem was....

Aloys' described the correct way - rotate it once in object mode, and rotate once backward in edit mode (be sure to select all vertices).
One day I ran through the cleft for the fiftieth time, and found that uru held no peace for me anymore.

No change, the green axis is still pointing the wrong way, and the Avatar still sits facing the wrong direction.

Here's what it looks like in Blender:

I get the feeling that I'm forgetting/missing something. Is there a preference setting or something that allows you to rotate object centers freely? :?

It should work, we're missing something here.
Maybe you manipulator is showing the global axis instead of the object's own local axis. Make sure that the Transform Orientation drop list displays 'Local'. (the list at the bottom of the 3d windows that usually shows 'Global'.)

At any rate, it's an original way to sit on a bench, maybe that's a local custom in your Age

If there's one I'd love to know it. :(

Yah, I've tried in both global and local.

In object mode. Make sure you're in Local Transformation. Select your object. Press N. In your dialog box, it'll say Rot Z put in 180. That'll rotate the object. THEN go into Edit mode, rotate it -180 degrees so its facing the right way.
