Sounds Mathematical

Those that have seen my Enobmort age know I have an interest in D'ni numbers

I recently threw the following at RAWA with I must note little hope of a reply.

I do understand your time is limited.

I have asked in the past about symbols for add, subtract, divide and multiply as well as index (ie.) raised to the power of (squered, cubed etc.) Particularly about having some symbol that was the equivilent of the decimal place.

Since then I have come up with more puzle ideas that require some for of notation and a vocalisation for the D'ni numbers 0 to 25.

I have had some ideas on this front and was wondering if you are unable to answer direct questions (make decisions on this front) would Cyan be prepared to sanction a Guild of Mathematician/Accountants if necessary as a subset of the Guild of linguists.

I do understand your time is limited.

One of the issues arising out of the reopening of the cavern as MOULAgain reguards the need for co-operative play to do the two ages Eder Delin and Eder Tsogahl the two garden ages.

I know of players that prefer to play the game alone and as such these age puzzles are excluded.

I have been considering a fix for this and while I don't expect it to be implemented soon I was wondering if Cyan would sanction the GoW (Guild of Writers) to consider this as a project.

The fix I am suggesting would only activate if there was only one player in the age say Delin.

This would also necessitate the establishment of vocalisations for the first six D'ni numbers (See my propsal for a New Guild) pressing each outer contact (button) in turn would allow you to hear the vocalisation for that button.

Then activating the door button would vocalise the numbers for the button order. Then pressing the buttons in the correct order would open the door for a short period long enough for the player to leave.

Given the complexity of this fix it may still be easier to do the age as a co-operative task while alowing the solo player to compete the age alone.

(This is Cyan Cannon and I understand that this may be vetoed)

If this proves to complex to retro fix how about another Garden age with this as a exit puzzle?

Given that I have asked about permission to run this as a GoW project I figured it only right I at least let everyone here know whiat I have asked.

The Garden age with exit is an option thats well within our capabilities as is an exit door as to weather it's possible to work this ourselves there's no harm in trying.

At some point in the future (how far in the future I do understand is a subject for debate elsewhere) we should get the tools to build this age.

This is something we could do and once built it would be an ideal age to offer to Cyan as a completed project.

Can I get some feedback as a measure of interest?

I like the idea of hearing vocalizations -- Yeesha begins speaking in D'ni before switching to English for us, so there is both precedent and unlocked potentional there. It lends itself well to the type of pattern-matching and exploration of the culture that good Myst puzzles are built on.

As one of those people who enjoys the solo play, I'll still defend the game's requirement for multiple players in the two Eders we have now, mostly because that is how it was released and that is how the age was intended. I was a little put off by the changes to Er'cana and Ahonnay, mostly because I hate change, but I accepted it as the writer's wishes. I'm all in favor of more solo puzzles going forward, but I don't feel compelled to turn the two Eders back into an "offline"/"GameTap" version. I do understand that your proposal allows for both kinds of play within the age, but I fear that would be even more confusing.

Back to the audio clues, I think it is still a worthy enhancement. I would keep in mind whether or not the sounds are the *only* clue to solving a mechanism as opposed to an extra hint or there for the enriched immersive environment. I've played some puzzles in other games (RHEM comes to mind) which would have been impossible for a deaf person to solve alone.

And arithmetic symbols? Of course!
