Message Redacted

Hello. It's come to my attention that the word "writers" in our banner has been covered with a large sticky note saying "message redacted".

Can someone tell me what this is all about?

It's a supposedly clever response by some in the GoW to the misperception of the recently revised rules on the MOUL forums that the Guild of Writers cannot talk about the Guild of Writers or link to its website - when in fact they can. It's probably clever and cute enough that, although the reality does not support its use, some members cling to their rebelious nature simply out of habit.

Yes, it's clever and cute that after 7 years
- Cyan wants us to build Ages. We can build Ages. Cyan won't acknowledge our Ages.
- It's breaking forum rules to tell people how to play our Ages.
- No IC storyline can happen that involves fan-Ages, because nobody can visit them.
- Cyan continues saying one thing, and enforcing something entirely different.
- We're stuck in a worse situation than we were when UU was open.
- We're still being treated like scum by Cyan.
It's very cute.</sarcasm>

I hate it when I wake up in the morning and there are trolls on the GoW who are not me.

I have to say that I agree with JWPlatt here. There was a misinterpretation.
Mystdee wrote:The new policies do not say that you can't link to the GoW or GoM or other website in general
the linking rule
VI. LINKS - Linking to webpages that break these forum policies for the purposes of getting around the forum policies is not allowed.
states that you should not link to a webpage, this basically means that you should not link to a specific post or topic in another forum or a blog entry on someone's site that specifically breaks the MOUL forum rules.
Ian Atrus wrote:What MystDee said: the rule is about single pages, not whole websites.
Note that the rule also specifies "for the purposes of getting around the forum policies", so there is also a matter of intention ("I know this topic is off limits here, but I made a post about it on my blog and I would like your opinion: [link]" "I can't link you to that page directly because it's against the rules, but follow this [link] then click the second link on the left, and then the second on the right to get there").
edit: and also, as others have said, Cyan never made explicit how much of the code will be made open source, but they *did* say the game assets would not be among it. Some game assets will be made available under a different license, for the purpose of making fan content.
RAWA wrote:Yeah, what Mystdee and Ian said.
Note: The mods and I have been in discussion about the new forum policies while they were being developed, and we're on the same page. If there is a question about the interpretations of the new policies, and a mod answers the question, please consider their answer to be the answer that I would give, because we're continuing to discuss these issues and others behind the scenes. That way, if there is a problem, I can post a clarification rather than posting "Yeah, that..." every time a question is answered.
Thanks!

This is the second time I've quoted these 3 posts...I don't know why it is still an issue to create drama over, especially since it is a misunderstanding.

The "drama" is because there's a notable discrepancy between the official rules and the unofficial explanation/interpretation. The wording of the offical rules hurt some feelings.
The [message redacted] is just a joke. There are three ways to react on it:
- Laugh at it.
- Like it.
- Hold your tongue.
Anything else wil make you come across as way too full of yourself

No we don't! Stop mis-ascribing me! Oppression!
...the "Message Redacted" note is an annoying response to a post on the official MOUL forums, detailing the rules on what kinds of discussions will be moderated. The rules haven't really changed, but they are still unhelpful for all GoW members who make Ages or tools. The rules as they stand say that discussion about modifications to any Cyan product (other than the rather unhacked MOULa) will be moderated away. Currently, all tools and Ages created are only usable with Uru: CC, which makes them officially verboten.
Unofficially, all Ages can be talked about on the official forum. And anyone who wants to play those Ages is linked to inoffensive pages here on GoW. Methinks Hoikas rankles at the idea that any particular page (and the effort behind it) could be considered offensive, and thus the "Redacted" banner was born.
I actually do not see a problem with Cyan choosing to only support hacking of MOULa, annoying as it may be. Nor do I see much of a problem with the current inconsistency between the rules and their enforcement, given moderation that is not antagonistic. However, as Trylon said, inconsistencies have bitten people in the past. That's why people should, and do, continue to protest them.

Essentially, it's the developers and hackers tired of being pushed aside by Cyan and their work essentially censored.
This game is supposed to be moving towards open-source, where the entire source code is available... but it's a no-no to talk about tools.
