odd blender 2.49 UI problem
I'm having an odd problem with the blender 2.49 UI. Not all the time, but most of the time its like it is glitching. Like, I try to rotate the display and it goes all crazy like switching between perspective and ortho or something and not just that. Makes it so that it won't select right either. Hard to explain. Anyone know a solution?

@bnewton81. Sorry, I don't have a fix for you - but I have the same issue. It does it on both my laptop and desktop. Both are new machines with fresh loads - and each have Win7. If we're experiencing the same thing..... when you rotate or drag - the perspective in the 3D View goes berserk. The perspective changes and sometimes various objects go WAAAY out of place in the X and Y axises - sometimes in Z.
I've searched to the best of my ability and haven't found so much as a reference to the problem. It doesn't do it quite so much or bad in wireframe. At first, I thought it to be due to the graphics chipset on my laptop. Then, recently I got a new desktop (pretty good specs) - with Win7 again.. and have the same issues. Needless to say, it's extremely annoying...
BTW, I'm using default settings - and it still happens.

sounds like we do have the same issue. It just started happening like a week ago. I'm on windows 7 too. Maybe an update is conflicting with blender. I use 2.49 to render animations and do uru stuff, and 2.5 for other stuff. I can't play animation in 2.5 for some reason.

Could it be an issue with the mouse driver?
Like, when you press the MMB (the wheel), Windows 7 now internally sends additional commands to the application, for example as if you have pressed 5 on NumPad?
Maybe mouse options reveal something that can be configured.
Could be interesting to know what mouse type (manufacturer) you both are using.
I don't have/use Windows 7 currently, but had access to a Win 7 PC where 2.49 just runs fine.

No Tach, I use the emulation mode; so I never use the mmb. It's not really that kind of thing anyway though. I may do a screen recording of it if I can get it to happen on demand. =) It is like the screen draw is messed up. Like perhaps a gfx issue. I will however check to make sure it is not my mouse acting squirly. Thanks for the idea. I'm using a Logitech LX7. I was using 2.49 for a bit over a year and never had these issues. I am thinking it may have something to do with my card. (ati 5570 1GB)

I've no idea about the persp/ortho bug, and I'm not on Windows 7; but I'ven encountered the Selection problem before when I forced anti-aliasing in my video drivers. Blender didn't like that.
I don't know how that works on ATI drivers, but on Nvidia drivers you can force AA for all 3D applications; including Blender. I wanted to see how the wireframe view looked. It does look good, but somehow the selection became very problematic.

@Tach and Aloys: I've tried various mice, and use all default settings for the graphics. I don't use emulation, - and always use the MMB. It doesn't ALWAYS do it. I notice it mostly with very large ages with many models spread over a wide area. For example, last night I started work on an age that consists of a single room. Every time I press the MMB, the perspective in 3D View changes just a little tiny bit... almost like everything in the window gets squished a little. But, it's almost unnoticable.
However, when working on a large blend - when pressing/holding the MMB to change view or drag, that's when it gets weird... and very irritating. IIRC, it never happened with XP. For giggles, I'll load up blender on a machine at the shop and see if I can replicate the problem on a 3rd pc. IIR, I'll try to get some screenshots too.

Sounds like you've managed to eliminate that possibility, but if you are using a Logitech mouse, you are likely also running their "Setpoint" software, which allows you to remap the buttons. (I have, for instance, for Blender, got the thumb button replicating a press of "." on the numeric keypad)

I have a spare HDD for my desktop. Gonna put XP on it and see if the problem arises.
BTW, at home I have a generic USB Laser mouse, as well as a Microsoft Explorer - and each get the same results.

Hmm, when I want to work with Blender, I have to disable anti-aliasing completely in the ATI driver for my old 1950XTX. Otherwise I get a false and strange color/texture display in the 3D viewport when I use GLSL shading. Same as Aloys described.
But I think this can't explain shifting of the viewing angle.
Oh, wait... I remember something. Logitech LX7 = cordless.
Some time ago I tried to work with Blender (Win XP) and a MX Revolution cordless laser mouse. It did not work well, completely unnavigable during rotations.
Then I replaced it with a mouse with a cable, and it worked.
Seems Blender is VERY nitpicking when it detects short breaks in the "mouse button still pressed" signal stream (don't know how to describe it better), so my assumtion back then was that cordless signaling of button states causes too many "lag" for Blender, because of chopped signals.
