Problems installing URUCC Linux-Virtualbox-Wine

Hello everyone, I'll properly introduce myself soon in the proper place, but right now I'm having a devil of a time just getting URUCC running at all.
I'm running Linux Mint 12. I tried installing URUCC in Virtualbox, used the patch, installed guest additions, etc. Still I got terrible performance, and numerous crashes. I'm talking not just game crash, but entire Virtualbox crashes. I had to start the game over several times. Occasionally the game would lose everything, and I would have to go back to avatar creation.
Then I tried Wine. I can't get the install to go past the first couple of screens.
Any other folks out there just using Linux. I desperately do not want to have to dual boot. I want to develop ages in Blender, and play while still in Linux.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am using Linux for years now, and actually almost all of the Offline KI and Alcugs development was done purely on Linux. So there's hope
I never used the installer via wine though. I'd suggest to create a new, clean installation in a VM, andthen copy these files to Linux (and making a backup^^). That should work fine with a recent wine version (1.3.37 is what I am currently using).
Sound decompress will not work properly, there is however a Python script in the libhsplasma repository doing the job.

I do almost all of my Uru development in Linux. I agree with Diafero's advice - don't bother with the installer, just copy your Uru files to your Linux installation.

Thanks for the responses guys, I really appreciate it. I realize that this is not a tech support forum for URUCC, but I am still confused about both of your replies. Are you guys saying that I should install URUCC using XP in VirtualBox, and then literally copy the folder that it was installed to the C drive that Wine uses? Or are you saying that I should continue to play using VirtualBox, do my develpoment under Linux/Blender, and copy the ages to VirtualBox? I'm confused. Could you guys explain what you meant once again.
I had TERRIBLE performance using VirtualBox, but at least the game loaded, Crashed all the time, but it loaded. Under Wine, it looks like I solved the strange CD switch issue, and I got the game to install, but I get a complete Stack Dump error before I even get to the desert scene... every time.

You don't even have to copy it into the wine C drive - anywhere in your home directory will do. I have $HOME/plasma/urulive/vanilla, which is the base directory that I copy whenever I want to get a new install for something. I have various Uru installs in subdirectories of $HOME/plasma/urulive.
To launch, I simple run
Code: Select all
cd ~/plasma/urulive/install_i_want
wine ./UruLauncher.exe
You can certainly write up a .desktop file so you can launch from a menu if you prefer - I do all my file management from the console, so this is the most convenient way for me.

Man I'm frustrated. I've never wanted to run a particular software more, yet had so much trouble.
I tried everything I can think of. I get awful performance under VirtualBox. I installed under Wine... never get past the avatar creation without a total crash. I tried copying the installation folder from VirtualBox into my home directory... never get past the avatar creation. My directory does not have a UruLauncher.exe file.
Again, I know this is not a tech support forum, but I don't know where else to turn. I would be happy to post the results from terminal if that would help. Maybe by PM, or another forum if there is a more appropriate one for tech support. I don't want to take up space here if it's not the right place... but the help is greatly appreciated.

OK, I may have stumbled upon the answer! While searching for UruCC tech support. I read that you should run UruExplorer.exe in Compatability Mode. The article mentioned someone using W7, and setting back to WXP. I'm running WXP in VitrualBox, so I selected W2000 Compatability. The game absolutely flys now! Awesome graphics. It's running perfectly now. I just entered the tree, now I'll see if it crashes in the traditional spot linking to Relto. Wish me luck. Thanks for the suggestions guys. Hopefully I can play through URU, and then join you all in some fan ages. Then, hopfully, you can all enjoy some ages that I plan on creating!

Glad you found another solution. However:

Uru offline does not have this, use "UruSetup.exe" there. Avatar creation should definitely work, but if you don't tell us what *exactly* is happening, I can't say where the problem is (my crystal ball is broken, sorry).
Also, if you want to continue to try getting it running on Linux, please, on the console, run "wine --version" and tell us what is says.

diafero, Thanks for the reply... but get that crystal ball repaired! Just kidding.
I am having great luck so far running UruCC under VirtualBox, that I'm reluctant to mess with Wine right now. I just wanted to play this game so badly, and I got tired of pulling my hair out looking for a way to make it work. I'll happily play, and let UruCC live under VirtualBox, and do all of my Blender stuff native under Linux. I'll give Wine a try another time.
BTW, I was running Wine 1.3.37. I'll see if Wine lets me run Myst 4.
Thanks

ARRGG! After a few days of running UruCC with great results under VirtualBox/Windows XP while in Compatability Mode (W2000), I had another huge crash. Even my saved sav folder does not seem to work. I even re-installed UruCC, and no luck. Crash right after the avatar creation. Every time.
