Blender: Windows ME, No Internet.
I have a friend who wants to use blender... now, there are a few problems tho... first of all, he doesn't have the internet, and he has windows ME. he doesn't have a DVD drive either... now, I burned the latest Blender Installer, a few tutuoials, and some textures on a disk, and gave it to him... now, he says he put it in the drive, but nothing happended... the disk didn't even show up... Now, I thought perhaps I could bring a Flashdrive to his comp, with the same stuff I put on the disk... but I'm not sure if windows ME has USB ports, or if a flashdrive would be compatable. Do any of you have any Idea how I could get blender working on his comp, so that he can make ages? He has lots of great Ideas, and it would be so great if he could acually create them in blender.

What does that mean?
a) There is no pop-up window appearing automatically when the disk is inserted
b) Opening "My computer", the CD doesn't show up at all.

In my opinion, Windows ME is as hard as a rock and as dumb as a brick...
You could always give him XP. They've already made a hack for the registry as it is and it's much less of a hassle to install than Vista.
Anyhow, just my advice. I'm sure someone else will have a better suggestion.

Just because he inserts the CD doesn't mean it will autorun. He may have to go to My Computer.
Also, you mentioned that he doesn't have a DVD drive. Is that what you burned the disk with? A DVD writter? If that's so, then, no, he won't see the disk as his CD Rom can't read it.
USB is hardware dependant. I don't remember if ME supports USB's or not.

well, i didn't put it in the DVD drive, I just put the disk in the other drive, and burned it. I'm not sure if this matters, but the disk type was a: Sony CD-R (Compact disc Recordable) 700mb.

No idea about the flash drive.
The CD won't necessarily pop up if Windows has been configured to not do so.
Quite frankly, if he can't solve this problem I doubt he'll be able to use Blender

It is possible that the CD that you are using, his CD Rom is having problems. Is it a CD-RW disk? If so, try using a CD-R instead.
The fact that he's using an old computer running ME doesn't help at all. Time to upgrade. Rather he is WAY over due for an upgrade.
You can get a new motherboard/CPU bundle that will handle XP just fine, and run at about 2.9 to 3.2 GHz for less than $50. It's all the new dual cores that are on the expensive side.
He can get a new internal CD writer for less than $30.
And they have Video cards for less than $49.
Granted, it won't run all the brand new games out there. My own system falls short of running the new Call of Duty 4, etc. But that's because I need to upgrade my Video card.

the disk type was a: Sony CD-R (Compact disc Recordable) 700mb. and, he doesn't want to buy a new computer, or motherboard or whatever... He has just enough money to buy a wii, which he is going to buy once there are some in stores... so, I doesn't have the money for it... and he just makes do with what he has, and he comes to my house to play the myst games (except realMyst and URUCC which work on his comp) and, he doesn't come over often, so i just thought it would be cool if he could make ages (and he would be good at it too... he has lots of great Ideas)
