Journal Questions.....

If you feel like you're up to the challenge of building your own Ages in Blender or 3ds Max, this is the place for you!

Journal Questions.....

Postby andylegate » Fri Jan 25, 2008 11:01 am

Have not got around to it, but I'm getting close to finishing up my Camp Bravo Night Time Age.

Only things left are repairing the swim area and the journals.

Now, the click regions are in for the journals.

However, they of course don't seem to be working, hehehe. :D

My question is: will the journals still work with the new plugin, via the script files that D'lanor made? Link-->here

Or is there some new, magical way that we do them now that will require another tutrial? :)

Well, for starters you'll need two snails, a cup of wee from a rabid dog and about 300 ml of cow saliva.
set up a kettle, to about 450 degrees, and wait till the water boils, pour in the saliva, stir slowly while saying "journal" sevaral times.
next, pour in the rabid dog wee, and thrust in the two snails.
Stir for about an hour, and while doing this, read the contents of your journal out loud.
....

....
after you're done, throw that hideous stuff away, start blender, set up a clickable, like in the FuncChk age, and link up D'Lanors scripts - they should work, as the clickables quickscript is written to be 100% compatible with the existing scripts.
One day I ran through the cleft for the fiftieth time, and found that uru held no peace for me anymore.

All I can tell you is that Python scripting is independent from the PyPRP version. If the code you used stopped working then it is unlikely that my script works.

Hey, was just getting around to working on my Journals today (been under the weather the last couple of days), when I came here to review what I had asked.

D'Lanor, I'm sorry dude! I meant to tell you, I never got around to implementing your script in my Daytime Age. I was still using the uam.showbook junk. And of course that didn't convert over at all.

So I don't know if your stuff works or not. I'm about to try, so we'll find out, and I'll let everyone know.

Mmmmm.......getting a syntax error trying to compile.

I think it will be better once I see this being used. I mean, making something clickable, that's show pretty well in the FuncChk age, sure.

But no example of a Journal there. It's a button instead. Hey, I'm all for clicking on buttons, but my Age is a training age, and so I have to have instructions there for people. And the best way to do that is through a book they can pick up and read.

I know that many people are more into making objects move, some sort of animations, putting in linking books, etc. But there are those of us that want to give our Ages some readable content through Journals.
So I think a Tutorial on how to do this is long over due.

Since I can't even get the _YourAge_Journals.py to compile in Plasmashop (it gives me a syntax error every time, and I can't see why, I gave up and just tried to compile D'Lanor's and it gives me a syntax error too), I'm skipping this and moving back to trying to get my swim area to work.

These two things are all I have left to fix before I can release the Age.

*sigh* Somehow I get the feeling that my template is still not easy enough. I will try to give it a "books for dummies" overhaul so that you do not need to change anything inside the code itself but just set your global constants and variables at the top of the file. I used that method for the page swapping instructions.

You will still need to learn PBML (Plasma Book Markup Language) for journals though. There is no way around that.

I'm game D'Lanor for the stuff you provided. I mean, yah, a Journals for Dummies would be great and easy, but I'm willing to learn also.

Problem is I KNOW PBML, but for some reason I get a syntax error, even if I just use your template. Not sure why, :(

Can you post the error in the Dynamic Book Template thread?
