Uru CC: IP E-mails

Postby Nek'rahm » Tue Mar 18, 2008 12:37 pm

From ryan@cyan.com

Me:

I just wanted to, off of the record, ask you something about Cyan and GameTap's IP over Uru in it's Live form.

We were hoping to try to get another version of Uru started in case Cyan can't get it up and running. Judging from your last e-mail, it seems our suspicions were confirmed. We were going to ask you something: Would it be alright for us to run a server like this in an Uru form?

I thought it over and there are reasons for you to both agree or disagree to this.

Agree:

1) It could help to encourage interest in Myst and Uru, as well as Cyan's works.
2) Following 1, more income would be generated towards Cyan and allied parties
3) It would allow Uru to continue in at least some shape and form

Disagree:

1) Cyan doesn't directly profit from this
2) IP rights come into question
3) GameTap's views not shared in this

Now, we understand you cannot speak on GameTap's sake, but if we were allowed to use material from Uru: CC, would this be alright (seeing as GameTap doesn't own any property rights to Uru CC's material)?

Please respond if you have a chance.

Ryan:

Pretty much said he'll get back to me, but he passed the letter around Cyan's HQ :)

I asked this as an Uru fan that was working with friends on coding from Uru CC, not as a representative of the Guilds, btw. Whatcha' think about this? I'm posting other IP related E-mails here.

Basically he's saying he can't say anything right now. But at least he's saying something, and that's certainly better than the daunting silence there's currently from Cyan..

I'm referring all other things to legal@cyan.com, but for things I think REALLY should be addressed, I send to Ryan. Cause they'll get to the heads of Cyan faster.

I think that anything we may be saying to Cyan right now is going down the drain. For some reason they won't speak; that may be because of agreements with GT or because they are still taking decisions. Beside, they already have been given all the infos about what we'd like to see them do and what we'd like to do ourselves.
All we can do for now is wait and see, and produce Ages.

I highlighted the term "off of the record" because it means that you told Ryan you would keep his reply private. However, your post includes his response. So, in order not to lose his trust, I suggest you remove his response from your post and just paraphrase it, e.g. "He said he'll have to get back to me."

Please be careful in your future letters to Cyan. If you do want to share their answers with everyone, then be up front about it.
Can we rebuild it? Yes, we can - here's how.

I meant that to be if he could tell me something off the record from GameTap and Cyan if he could.

But I agree with what you have to say. His reply is now removed ^_^

This is not good... Uru isn't even dead, Cyan hasn't even said that they can't continue Uru. Don't try to force their hand. I think the less bother we give them the better right now.

You do want Uru to live on and not force them to say it's ok to make some kind of D'Nay.

D'Nay will not be as good as Uru.

D'Nay will be "ok" but not great.

If it was a choice of D'Nay or Uru what would you pick?

If they think that all we want is to do our own thing then... they might just nix Uru altogether. :?

Please don't annoy them.
And PLEASE don't make it seem like we want to make our own thing rather than play Uru.

All they need now is to have people dwelling on UruLive's second death, give the time to morn/collect their thoughts. I know it's hard but, they need a break. Think of how many email's like that Cyan has received, and they got back to you. They're trying to be helpful to their community but... don't make it any harder than it already is for them.

Thanks

This is just a shitty situation for everyone right now. Things will be better (or at least clearer) next month.

Amen.

Me and DaVinci are working on a forum that would act like UruGuilds used to, but I'm gunna need to work with him this week.

I'll also be approaching the Guilds in a little bit, as the site will hold all information involving the Guild progress as well as information from Cyan and such concerning Uru.

Well, we're all of two minds about this situation, I suspect.

We want to give Cyan time to figure things out, so we are cautiously optimistic while we wait, waiting for the day when either the hammer falls or we are given encouraging news.

But at the same time we are loath to wait. After all, all of our hard work may be for naught...and we are impatient to hear our collective fate.

Cyan is most likely aware of this.

The longer we wait, the less hopeful the situation becomes. But it may still be awhile yet before we hear anything. MOUL is still online and I doubt we will hear anything definitive while it is still active.
