Move the Sequence Prefixes

Postby Whilyam » Sun May 11, 2008 5:48 pm

Hello, I know ALCUGS is/was a big part of the Age-writing genesis, but I think it's time that list of prefixes was moved to the GoW wiki. It turns people off to have to register specially there just to put in their info. YAS syndrome kicks in. Yet Another Site. :P

Ah, I didn't even think about an addition to the ULM. I hope this gets done soon. If nothing else, couldn't someone just copy the entire page and paste it on the GoW wiki? It's crude, but I think (especially after seeing this has been discussed multiple times) that something needs to get done here.

Well, since Alcugs was there first technically the YAS would be this site. ;)

If you feel the need you could always add it to the wiki yourself. You must make very clear however that only sequence prefixes above 10000 should be added here. The numbers below 10000 are by agreement reserved for the Alcugs wiki.

Then we somehow have to get the numbers from 10000 upwards that were reserved through the ULM site. Unfortunately that is impossible since the ULM site does not show any prefixes that are in use. It just hands out the next available prefix. And there we have the current stalemate which is why nothing happens.

I previously also mentioned the fact that the ULM system is not public and thus unavailable for starting writers. So IMO it is utterly useless in this form.

Yes, everyone agrees with Alcugs having the first 10,000 numbers ... and because (our) numbers are generated by the ULM website (and that you cannot request specific numbers) these conditions are met by default ... :? (as it only issues numbers above 10,000 ... )

D'Lanor wrote:Then we somehow have to get the numbers from 10000 upwards that were reserved through the ULM site...

but this isn't necessary is it ? ... since no-one else can "get" anyone elses numbers anyway ... as you say "It just hands out the next available prefix" ... we don't need to know who has what numbers ... do we? (I can't think of a reason off hand, but maybe there is one ...)

At present, "newbie" writers have to download all the current software, and (if they want to publish to the public via the ULM - which is the prefered method by downloaders) ... then eventually they will have to register with the ULM site ... so, at present at least ONE site registration is needed whichever method they use ... but using the ULM's 10,000+ numbers means a "newbie" only has to register with ONE site from "start" to "finish" ... (and it also stops them from getting confused with the Alcugs tutorials which are no longer applicable to the GoW plugin...). If a newbie uses the present method he has to register with Alcugs and then, if he wants to publish later he has to register with the ULM site (2 registrations)

(It also means that people who want to follow the Alcugs "path" have the rest of the first 10,000 numbers to use ... and that GoW people are not using them up unnecessarily ... so it's good for Alcugs too ... ;) )

If a "newbie" uses the present method he has to register with Alcugs and then, if he wants to publish later he has to register with the ULM site (2 registrations), with "our" method, only one website registration is required ... whatever they decide to do with their creatiions ...

I just don't understand why this isn't being promoted as the "correct" method ... ?

1) It is independant of Alcugs and does not "tread on Alcugs toes" in any way (that I am aware of :? )
2) It avoids stumbling upon conflicting (Alcugs) tutorials for new age creators using the GoW plugin
3) It means that they only need to register with one site - whatever they plan on doing with their creations
4) Because no-one can manually edit the GoW numbers, no one can accidentilly repeat, overwrite or change the ULM site allocated numbers (unlike Alcugs Wiki page)
5) There is no need for a wiki page at the GoW with all the allocated numbers (unless I'm missing something.. )

... please ... will someone please tell me why this isn't the way forward for the GoW ... is it something to do with (or fear of?) Alcugs ? ? ... surely not?

I'm not sure what's got you so riled up. You seem to agree that there isn't much that can actively be done about the sequence prefixes, (we can't have a wiki page of them because we don't know who they belong to) and that by the time somone starts age writing they have probably downloaded ULM anyway, and generally accepted it as the main way to distribute ages.

So then, what exactly is it that you want people to do differently? No one has said anything about this not being "the way forward". No one has done much else either because as we just established, there isn't much TO do. As for "promoting" it as the "official" method.. how is that not happening? If it's something stated on the wiki, feel free to change it. If you're looking for some sort of special registration feature of pyprp or ULM, that requires development time and energy, and can't be expected to happen quickly.

errr... I'm not fired up ... :o ... it's just that the wiki currently tells people to go to Alcugs ... ? ? ? ... and I just don't understand why ... ? and everytime a discussion starts on this topic it "fizzles out" without any resolution or action. As far as I am aware, the ULM site hasn't changed and the sequence prefix allocator is still working and there needs no "extra" work for the ULM client ... just instructions on the Wiki

I haven't changed it because I don't feel I have the authority to do that ... (and because it was discussed at a Guilds meeting but the log was never posted so I have no idea if there were any objections) ... :? Also, (as far as I remember) Trylon was a bit vague about it ... and seeing how it's his site that issues the umbers I would have expected him to have said or done something to get people to change to this new GoW system

... having said that, if he gives me the nod, I'm more than happy to to a quick "tutorial" on getting sequence prefixes from the ULM site ... I'd just like "confirmation" that this IS what other people want to happen ...

Well, you do have the authority to change it, as does everyone in the GoW. That's why we have a wiki, and not some semi-static site administered by people with not enough time on their hands. ;) I say, change it, and if nobody cares to object enough to change it back, you're good. As for me, I haven't seen any opposition anywhere, just lack of initiative in this particular area. That's where you can step in. ;)

Thanks Trylon ... that was all I needed ... I just felt that I didn't want to do it without your say so ... as it's sending traffic to your site ...

I'll do a tutorial now... then the matter will finally be resolved .... :) ***does a happy dance when thinking about the reduced amount of posts about sequence prefixes that he'll need to answer ***
