I am perfectly capable of appreciating the opinions of those who may disagree with me. I am not perfect and therefore neither are my opinions. Ok, that out of the way, here's my take.First, by definition, I'm pretty sure that Age Creation is hacking i.e. "the modification of game file." The real question is it is legal and more importantly whether it is right. The first, I really have no clue on, I'm not a lawyer. The second, is kind of a maybe. Age Creation is power, the power over content. In of itself, power in nether good nor bad. Whether or not Age Creation in a detriment to the future of Uru depends on how we wield said power.
Second, like us, I don't think Cyan is unified on the subject themselves. If they wanted us to stop they would come out and say so. Yet all these vague illusions seem to suggest that they can't endorse what we do either. To add to the confusion is the fact that Cyan's policy on the MOUL forums is to stop all discussion of hacking, but then redirect the discussion to the GoW forums. It's almost as if they're saying "Look, create outside of our reach so we can't stop you." My guess is, and emphasize "guess," that this is do to one of the following:
1. Cyan is legally obligated to at least attempt to prevent the publication of new Uru content because GameTap has those right.
2. Cyan is afraid that in developing our own tools we are inadvertently diverging from plans that have of their own and that when the time comes reintegration the two groups will be problematic.
3. Cyan is afraid that with out a measure of control, unrestricted age creation could go against future additions to the Uru Cannon.
Now any, all or none of these guesses could be correct. Personally I think that if your here, you've already decided that you want to purse age creation so I think it's unlikely that we're going to just stop because of this conversation. I think what we really need to do is be aware of where the pitfalls are in wielding a power like Age Creation.
It really amazes me how much ooc Age Creation parallels the ic Art of Writing. I sure the D'ni Guild of Writers had many similar heated discussions in there time.
