I already have the hardware for a strong server, static IP, and unlimited bandwidth on a businees account.

I'm just wondering how long this will take to get up and running. And what kind of hoops a shard owner will have to jump through.

I just hope they don't set hardware and bandwidth requirements so high as to be unreachable for the average person!

Why? Do you want people hosting parts of the game server from their desktop on a frequently-disconnecting, dynamic-IP residential "broadband"?

Woah, there Deledrius. I think that Preachr just really wants to be able to host a shard, and is hoping its within his capacity to do so. Given the current economic situation in the US, its not possible for many people to have the money to spend on these things. He has a very valid concern there. I sympathize with him as I know how much of an investment it is to host a machine.

I understand that. But the wording "I hope they don't set the requirements too high" implies that Cyan would intentionally be limiting who can host. It's not a victimization. The requirements (if any) would presumably be set to insure a basic level of quality and reliability, not to disqualify people. There's a big difference between the two, and I've seen enough of people interpreting one for the other when it came to the client requirements for MOUL as it is.

The "average person" does not likely have the hardware or connection to reliably run a server. That's not an artificial limitation, nor is it Cyan's fault.

At any rate, we have no idea what the requirements (if any) will be.

The economy in the US aside, I probably didn't word that very well.

What I was trying get at is this... there are different levels of servers and hardware needed to run them.

If you just have a local network server at home, it will only need fairly lowend hardware running Linux to do it's job.

A small business server will require a higher level of hardware to make it work well.

Hosting a game server will take an even higher level of hardware. A game server is essentually a data server. Though it might give out some files also (updates etc). One of the main requirements of a data server isn't the cpu speed, though that needs to be fairly high. The amount and speed of the ram is a higher priority along with disc speed to some extent (raid arrays). Raid is a mixed bag and a whole subject unto itself.

Even though Cyan hasn't said anything as yet about server requirements, there is going to be a minimum that everyone running a shard wiil have to meet.

There will also have to be a minimum bandwidth needed requirement. No-one likes lag less than I do. And as was mentioned you will need either a static IP (best) or use a dynamic IP redirect service like a lot of the old UU shards did.

I hope the clarifies what I meant by server requirements.

I understand the need for small mom and pop servers (such as servers for small communities, test servers, etc), but there will have to be some kind of treshold otherwise it could affect playability. The unsuspecting player wandering in a server ran from home and getting booged down might decide to forget about MORE entirely.

In any case the show-stopper will be bandwidth. More specifically, upload bandwidth. Even more, monthly bandwidth allowance.

Not to put to fine a point on it since this is something "pie in the sky" at this point but more then one person can be involved in hosting a shard. ;)

Though the person running the Shard hardware should have the resources to do it solo in case everyone else drops out in the middle of the ISP's contract.

...Release of the source for the plug-in (only) to the Guild of Writers.

I wonder why they would bother controlling the release of the source for the 3DSMax plug-in. When the tool devs convert it to a Blender plug-in, the Python code will be there for all to see. Even if the MO:RE Blender plug-in is distributed as compiled Python files (pyc), they can be easily decompyled.

On another note, they need to release the MO:RE Plasma API to everyone so that we can write scripts for our ages. I'll bring that up at today's press conference.
Can we rebuild it? Yes, we can - here's how.

Good idea.

You know, this sentence could simply mean "release of the source for only the plug-in, not plasma, to the GoW".
