General debates and discussion about the Guild of Writers and Age creation

Relto pages... herm...

Postby Nek'rahm » Thu Jul 03, 2008 6:44 pm

Will we be able to implement these into Ages?

If so, which Ages will be "allowed" or "honored" with the opportunity of supporting Relto pages?

Unless there were certain Ages that followed a core or supported storyline made by the Guilds, I don't see if any Relto pages can ever be added to the game...

Why not just make your own home age? That'd be way cooler than trying to add to Relto. :D
Currently getting some ink on my hands over at the Guild Of Ink-Makers (PyPRP2).

Well, as I've said before, my Blender skills suck... a lot.

You'd still have to be able to make whatever you want to add to relto.

Pure Conjecture:
That said, modifying relto may or may not be considered off-limits by Cyan since it's story-relevant. We'll have to wait until they hammer out those guidelines that Chogon mentioned are being worked on by Rand and RAWA to know for certain.

Relto pages require:

1: Modification of the existing relto page Python file to support your python file
2: Inserting into and modification of the GUI prp file, to include another relto page GUI module (not impossible, but still hard to make atm)
3: Making a relto PRP addon, which is compleately in style with relto.
4: (Maybe) Modifying the SDL file for relto

That's not a process that can be easily done for everyone who wants it.
Every relto page requires manual modification of the "central" Python file at least.
One day I ran through the cleft for the fiftieth time, and found that uru held no peace for me anymore.

Yup. There are SDL vars for each page. You'd need to make a new record with the additional state variable.

Well yes, what's listed I understand.

I've seen relto's sdl and prp files before, and I understand the base concept behind it, but that's not my question.

My main question is, do you think we'd have any new Relto pages (non-Cyan) in MORE? I think it's doubtful, as we have yet to find an "easy" way to do it (only 1 way right now, and it's cumbersome)

Yeesha Page GUI problem asside, adding something to Relto isn't that hard, it's not easy, but it's possible.

Which means adding stuff to Relto is OK. Adding actual Yeesha pages is more of a risky thing, as it's steping on Cyan's cannon toes. But who said we need Yeesha Pages to change our Reltos? :) Explorers could easily add furniture, plants, even dig holes in the ground..
The way I read it is that we can only do things that could be done by hand, not by changing the actual Age descriptive book (or with Yeesha pages) That means we probably shouldn't make any drastic changes, like turning the clouds into water, adding another island, or have snow falling from the sky.
That still leaves a lot of room for nice changes and personalisation. Plus Relto being a small Age, it'd make for 'small' changes, one could easily pull out something new every two weeks.
I'd love to give my own Relto a couple changes.. 8-) For one thing I'd cut down the tree near the waterfall that blocks the access to the backside of the mountain. (I remember Chacal even did a tutorial for that a while ago) That thing annoyed me ever since it was added during the old beta.. :x

I would like to add an island, if possible, or at least increase the area of Relto.

Whatever, it doesn't matter, but thank you. I missed that meeting.

BTW: yes, I hate that tree too :X

Why not just make your own home age?

I'd like to see a new, collaborative home Age. Or maybe "home" is the wrong word. But a new, Explorer-written "blank canvas" Age. Writers could then contribute new features to the island, and allow other writers to hide (or display) the collectible pages around other explorer Ages. As far as I know, this is all possible with PyPRP.

This is not the same as "new Relto pages", but the two efforts can exists in parallel. By-hand changes to Relto, and bigger, crazier changes (Explorer experiments in the Art) to the Explorer Age.
