Okay, 2 questions then. If we now get lightmap flags, does this mean we still have to follow the old procedure using Lightmaps? Or do we now just make a UVLayer, set the Lightmap to that and just use the AMB button rather than the Multiply and CalcAlpha buttons?

Make a new UV Layer, name it "Lightmap" (or something else). Unwrap it so that no two faces overlap each other (the lightmap UV Pack script is great for this....).

[ALT+B] to bake the lightmap to a texture. Save the texture file somewhere.

Add the lightmap texture as a new texture in the object's material. Tell it to UV map using the "Lightmap" UV layer. Change the mode to "Multiply". Turn on the AMB button.
