Is anyone interested in creating new areas of D'ni?

General debates and discussion about the Guild of Writers and Age creation

Do you want to create a new piece of the city of D'ni?

Yes, and I'm working on it right now, in fact! The D'ni rock!

Jennifer, this is the area I'm working on. Temple of Illumination Its loosely based on the idea of Dan Brown's Illuminati from Angels and Demons, adapted for a D'ni storyline. I'm still waiting back for my FCAL from Cyan, and put in a asset request form, but it may take awhile to hear back from them cause they only do the asset requests once per quarter.

I have been working on a concept for an age "owned" by the D'ni, but not in the cavern. Perhaps I misinterpreted the poll, but I marked #4.

In summary, the age is named Quarantine and its purpose was to sequester books linking to dangerous or unstable ages as designated by the council of guilds. As a project, it will primarily be a puzzle age since access is not to be taken lightly. The entry zone will (hopefully) have D'ni writing that indicates that the area beyond is sealed by order of the council of guilds. A journal might be found containing a hint to one or more of the puzzles. At least the first puzzle will require 4 explorers to solve and I am considering making the puzzle reset automatically after 1 hour. However, I hope to have a registration mechanism which will allow anyone who solves the multi-person puzzle to bypass it in the future by using their Ki(?).

Gee, did I just outline the whole age? Anyway, there are several technical details to work out as well as the architectural design.

I've been brainstorming many ideas. Now it's just a matter of finding the time to make them between my other ages I'm working on :P

Looks great so far! The architecture is familiar enough for me to believe it is of D'ni origin, and yet it is something entirely new.

I have a couple questions regarding this and other explorer ages in D'ni:

- How do you make the GZ beam appear in your age?
- How do you enable the KI coordinates for your age?

Your answers would make great tutorials!
Can we rebuild it? Yes, we can - here's how.

The GZ beam you'd need to make yourself out of a projection-light and a texture. The KI-coords have something to do with the class plMaintainersMarkerModifier (0x010d). I don't have the structure of that class on hand so I'm less tempted to try it out and see what happens. :P
Currently getting some ink on my hands over at the Guild Of Ink-Makers (PyPRP2).

As for the GZ beam, you'd also need to animate the light, so beam rotates at the same speed as the GZ Beam. The problem with that is it can interfere with the Cyan Storyline, (if they ever turn off the GZ beam, you'd have to turn off yours etc). Which is why I didn't include that yet. (I want to get an okay with Cyan to include things like the GZ beam. I'm not even sure if the age will get approved as it is, as there's a balcony that overlooks the lake. And they could change the lake light etc, and my age would interfere again. But I want to keep the balcony, because it's nice. (currently when you walk onto the balcony, the camera circles out to get a full view of the temple, and the surrounding "niche" in the cavern walls.

However, as this age is intended for both CC and MORE. I may make a separate export for just CC, and put the beam in there. As the story for CC is finished, and Cyan won't be making changes to that game, I don't see any reason why the age shouldn't be made to match that. At least for offline play.

You can use an SDL variable for the GZ beam for easy on/off switching with the vaultmanager.

This is true. However since MORE is going to be controlled by Cyan, we don't know yet how much control they will have over our ages. (Controlling SDL variables etc). So I'm waiting to hear from them concerning this and other issues with D'ni cavern areas. But I can attach the variable for now, and give a wait and see approach to it.

Unless you set the DISPLAYOPTION=hidden flag on your SDL variable they can control it from the VaultManager. ;)

Now this may seem way out on a limb, but I can see this being entirely possible and not breaking rules. If I really could make something decent this is what I would want to see as far as the additions to the cavern are concerned...

Since it is possible to make additions to the caven, why not find an entirely new area of the cavern the D'ni never found and start an entirely new city. It is not allowed to make any additions to the existing Ae'gura, K'veer, City Proper etc., which kinda sucks because we will probably never see anymore additions to those areas, what is beyond the rubble or a brighter lake. It should just be abandoned and used as a great place to visit, to learn from and get ideas for D'ni like designs. Use these ideas to create an entirely new place with a new guild hall etc., link it into the nexus and let it go. Since there is the ability to design different neighborhoods, why not an entirely different city area not associated with any existing cavern. Story for supplies, man power etc. - independent funding from people that know construction and are in the business.

Don't know just a crazy idea. Then there would not be the issue of overlooking the lake or Ae'gura etc.
