Subworld despair!

Postby ekimmai » Mon Sep 29, 2008 5:11 am

Aaaaaaghhhhhhh!

I'm trying desperately to combine a sitting mod, button-push and animation using subworlds but whatever I have tried so far fails in one way or another. A similar goal to what I am trying to achieve (- I'm trying to say as little as possible about the real puzzles as they stand in my age) is that seen in Myst IV where the player sits in a chair, flicks a switch and drops down through the floor, still sat in the chair. I have so far managed the sitting, switch and animation but when I try and add a subworld (to keep avatar in chair) the sittingmod or switch cease to function.

I thought I would be able to surround the whole area in a subworld and just make sure everything has the necessary physical subworld reference in the Alcscript. I've tried lots of alternatives. My latest attempt caused an export error - something about water (of which I have none!).

I also think perhaps I am not completely clear from the Wiki page where a subworld empty must lie: what is the point of the empty? Must it be placed on the chair itself and be animated instead of the chair?

Does anyone know if this is even possible using alcscript??

I Know D'Lanor was working on this same thing ....and I think he found a solution ...

Thanks Boblishman, that post helps clear a few things up but not sure it deals with the same problem - mine should be easier I think! :) My animation always works okay if the object is clickable in the first place.

I think it is the same problem. You need to disable smartseek.

from what I can understand from your first post you should try doing it the following way:

1) Create your empty (which is the subword), and place it in the centre of the chair.
2) Create you click button, sitting mod, region etc and give them the subworld phyical property
3) Create your subworld entry region (so that it totally encompasses the chair, region, sitting mod & button)
4) Create your subworld exit region (to return you to the "main" world after the animation - make sure it has the subworld phyical property!
5) Parent the chair (and anything else that needs to move) to the subworld empty
6) Animate the subworld (empty) moving it to where you want the chair to go ... (when you animate the subworld empty in Blender, you should see the chair etc, move with the subworld empty as you advance the frames)

hope this helps

If I want to rotate the chair around a point nearby (but not connected to the chair) can I use this other point as the subworld an do everything else the same?

And D'Lanor, am I disabling smartseek on the sittingmod or the switch? What's the code for doing that?

Many thanks

I don't understand what you mean by this :? ... could you explain in a bit more detail ?
(the subworld empty can be anywhere you like inside the subworld region) ... however, when you animate the subworld (which you'll have to do to make the avatar move with it) the objects that are parented to it will move in relation to the subworld empty ... you can see how that will be inside Blender

Think you've answered my question B'Man. Just checking that the subworld does not need to sit on the chair itself if it is the chair which collides with the avatar.

Hang on. Are you trying to make the avatar do an animation while seated? That is not possible I am afraid since the avatar is already doing the "sitting animation".

yeah ... I'm pretty sure that's not possible ... you can only do one animation at a time. If you're trying to replicate the Ahonay Sphere 4 ride ... well ...you may notice that you don't click a button AFTER sitting in the chair, you just click the chair, which then triggers the whole sequence of sitting in the chair and the animation of going down into the "ride"...
(You'll also notice that once in the ride, you're in 1st person camera ... now you know why ... ;))
