Does MOOS need to attract new players?

Postby Nalates » Thu Jan 01, 2009 12:58 pm

I was surprised to see the sentiment expressed that Uru/MOOS does NOT need to attract new players. It seems obvious to me that it would but this a personal thing with lots of reasons.

Whatever, I put up a poll at MOUL: Does MOOS need to attract new players?

Drop by and vote. Thanks.

I think we should keep new players in mind and make preparations to attract them in time (after set-ups are complete and everything is working etc.

I didn't vote at your poll, btw, because I'm confused by the wording of the options - I'm not sure which one to choose.

From your Moul post:
Do we want to attract new players to MOOS?

* Do you want MOOS to attract new players?
* You do NOT want to attract new players?
* Do you NOT care either way?
* Only matters if MOOS is not cheap to run?

The question marks on the end of the options confuse me - My first instinct is to assume that the options are reply questions (conveynig surprise [consistent with your mention of surprise in your post here]).
In that case option #1 means that I didn't think MOOS should attract new players, and am surprised that [someone] thinks it should. Ín that case #2 likewise means that I'm surprised that someone wouldn't want to attract new players.

On the other hand, the wording of #3 and #4 doesn't allow a similar interpretation, and can only be interpreted correctly if they are either considered questions asekd of me (in which case I could only say "yes" to one). But then again that doesn't fully fit with the wording of #4.

The simplest option is to ignore the question marks and only take the basic idea of the options (#1: want moose to attract, #2: don't want moose to attract, #3: don't care wither way, #4: only matters if it costs too much €/$)

Well, in any case, I'm not convinced that the poll results will be valid because of the confusion in the answers.

EDIT:
On reading this post back it reads a bit offensive to me, that wasn't the intention. Sorry if it comes across that way.

One day I ran through the cleft for the fiftieth time, and found that uru held no peace for me anymore.

The trend is towards getting new players anyway sooner or later we will need fresh ideas.

Trylon, I do not see your post as offensive. If you thought it was, why did you not reword it? - I think you over thought it. But, that may be a language thing... The ? marks in that context might be bad grammar.

J'Kla, I think we will have to attract new players for Uru to survive. For me it is just SOOOO obvious. But Walthers (sp?) sentiment surprised me. I was curious how many may feel as he does. Apparently not many feel NOT attracting is a better option. When we will want to attract new players is open... but that we should be looking ahead is right on.

There is a huge 'I don't care' factor. There are 465+/- that have read the post and 35 voted, 10 don't care. I would make bets the 25 that voted for attracting new players are active core players, if there were a way to know.

I was surprised how many read far more into the question than I intended. Some read motives into the questions, how they were phrased, and Oh! The alienation caused... :o

I thought about a 'depends' choice. I omitted it because I thought it would allow the discussion to be too broad, like I could control response...

During the latter days of UU we were adamant that we needed new content to attract either new players or old players back. We did have a core that used it as a meeting place and quite often the discussion turned to the future and what we could do about it.

My original project was a desperate effort to create new content in UU without using as little of the original Cyan creativity as I could.

It has been hard for me to sit out on the sidelines while I felt first D'mala and then MOUL went off on what I felt was just the wrong tangent. It's an absolute that we need new players and we need to attract them with new content we can't force them to play and actor based content only attracts them when the actors are there.

It is going to take time to produce the level and intensity of detail that Cyan have managed to embed into the original game but there is stuff to work on we need to find things for players to do. We spent hours perfecting the tent climb stupid an as unlikely as it was. Players spent days perfecting the balcony jump and heaven knows how much time was wasted perfecting the inverted cone balance. Lots of us found the unlikely skydive in Gahreseen and plummeted to an unlikely panic relto. Many of us explored a series of unlikely jumps to stand on an invisible floor above the stair well of the library or in the loft space of the pub. Or the unlikely skill of sitting balanced on the top of a flip chart showing a map of the city.

None of these were Cyan invented tasks Yeesha never once held a meeting on top of the DRC tent yet many of us met there and just sat and chatted. These were faults in the original code that we exploited for our own entertainment MOOSE will need ages. Flawed ages where a cunning Jump turn will allow you to demonstrate a rope climb to stand on the roof of a building you were never meant to see. Or a pole sit that in real life would see you rather painfully impaled.

Uru has had unusual entertainments that have had nothing to do with Yeesha or the Journey but all of them were seen as a reason to stay or invite new players to see this created world from a new angle.

From what I read on that topic the thought seemed to be less of "we don't want new players" and more of We don't want to change uru into something it's not to attract new players.Could have read that wrong though.
By the way I just wanted to clarify that I didn't mean to anger anyone when writing this it was merely an observation.

Now my actual opinion is that I think we will need new people eventually, but that we should focus on having a game to play, waiting until we get uru running, before we try to attract players.

Very well written J’Kla. I missed the Gahreseen Skydive. Exploiting the flaws in Uru was a great pass time. I have no idea how long it took me figure out the balcony jump and make it. I would like to have seen more 'flaws' survive. :)

Nalates, I think you've understood by now that the sentiment I was trying to express was a different one. I made no statements about what Uru/MOOS needs. I only made a statement about what I want.

At any rate, I find it a bit confusing that you're spreading this discussion out over several forums.

I think I speak the opinion(s) of many here when Nalates seems to be trying to garner support to make Uru into Second Life: Part Deux. At least, that is how it seems to me. She apparently needs to address a very broad audience to do so, so she must cross post on UO, MOUL(dy bread), GoW, and GoMa.

Not trying to attack here, but that's just what I see. And with Uru going open source, that's perfectly acceptable if she wishes to do so.
