I was going to make a completely sarcastic post, but I think it would be better to give you some advice that my Composition professor just gave my class. (Emphasis as the professor stated it) WHERE ARE YOUR DETAILS?!

Why would MQ in Drizzle be a disaster?
How would MQ fail because of drizzle?
Why should we stay away from MQ? Do you mean that we should not even play it?

Not to attack you, but many of your posts lack sufficient explanation of statements. I know I would appreciate such details.

Why are we discussing the legalities of putting in MQ worlds into Uru? The entire purpose of this guild is to create new and original ages for Uru and D'ni. You're not a writer if you're considering this, you're a thief.

Secondly, if you steal their worlds and put them into Uru, you'd only be doing is tarnishing Cyan's image. I'd pull out quick too, if they're community starting stealing files from my online game. You see they have the challenge of making money, and investing it into our game as well. That's not easy, so why should we make it harder for them?

As I put hard work into trying to create worlds of my own in Blender I can't help but feel more and more alone.

I personally can answer your questions Adam.

How would MQ fail because of drizzle? - Magiquest costs money, and if someone purchases these files for Magiquest, and distributed them via shards and torrents, or even makes it available for download using Drizzle (I'm not saying you would Dustin, I'm just saying what if) then people can get Magiquest content for free, that is piracy, which IS illegal. Plus, if no one is paying for Magiquest, how is it going to survive? All we'd be accomplishing is a disservice to Cyan Worlds, which hardly seems worth it

Why would MQ in Drizzle be a disaster? - I believe if Creative Kingdoms saw what Cyan's fans and followers were doing with their work, they wouldn't want to be involved in Cyan at all, therefore, destroying a big (and probably their biggest) source of income for Cyan Worlds. Plus, we're going to be ticking off another game company, which is not gonna get us anywhere.

Why should we stay away from MQ? Do you mean that we should not even play it? - It's not that we should stay away from Magiquest, it is that we should keep away the Magiquest content from Uru. As I said in previous posts, and posts by Justin, putting these ages in Uru makes NO sense when trying to fit it in with Uru's deep story and realism (Assuming anyone here still cares about the story or realism). What's next, Half-Life 2 Maps? Second Life maps? It completely shatters the realism of the great game we all fell in love with, that is Uru.

The whole purpose of the Guild of Writers was to make OUR OWN fan-created ages for URU, not take content from other places and online worlds and just slap in into the game just because we can.

I honestly think, if this is the kind of road the community is going to go down, I'd rather Open Sourced Uru not happen, I'd prefer Cyan go back to the idea of MORE, because I don't think we can be trusted.

I note that no-one here has said anything along the lines of "CompanyX is infallible". Which may mean that communities are indeed boring.

Hacking is of course infallible, though. We are glad to have the knights in shining armour fight the good fight.

Any news on anything Uru related?

Well put and kinda sad but I often wondered if this was a contributing factor in the shut downs and delays of Myst online, they know the fans have been threw the code from what seems to be stem to stern, I feel if we are ever gonna get a legal version of Uru Live we hafta prove that we as a community can be trusted

People will hack their stuff. They know that. In fact they're overjoyed about it because it is really good for their sales. They add their copy protection stuff just as a service to hackers, to give them more to do.

That Soviet-thought-control vs. hacker-freedom-fighter crap is a bit annoying ... but it will crop up.

There is talk of a tool that supports conversion of MQO files and for my part, I'm not interested in it. If it ever appears, perhaps some kind soul will fork the tool in question and put his version on a delishard or something so that people will be free to choose.

I do have to wonder about this:

Why bother putting MQ in Uru? If you want to explore those worlds, and want to help Cyan continue adding to them......then pay the fee and go explore them THERE.

Why is there this overwhelming NEED to convert the files and try to put them in Uru in the first place? I can only think of 2 reasons, and both are ugly:

1) Because people want a free ride, and hope that others will convert it and give them the converted files or the means to convert it themselves using tools that will be made available. So, yah, someone got their 10 bucks, but for each that DO NOT pay their 10 bucks, but instead, grab the files from someone else, that's 10 bucks lost. That's rather cheap.

2) Because people want to have them on their shards.....and again, it's a free ride. Why bother paying 10 bucks when I can go visit this place on the shard I belong to?

There is a 3rd reason actually: Because It's There. The same reason people climb mountains. Because it's a challenge, and people want to see if they can do it.
I can really understand this one, but the problem is, what they accomplish doesn't STAY with them. It get's shared (hey, sharing is good) but then it's not just a few people here and there....instead it EXPLODES within our community.

I can understand wanting to put Myst Ages in Uru, I really, REALLY do. I really jumped up and down for joy when my avatar linked in to Noloben from Myst V. But then again, I had paid for the Myst V files. I bought that game. I bought Uru. I paid for MOUL, and smartly kept the files when Game Tap shut it down.
The point is, Cyan and the publishers got their money from me. Then the hackers that did the hard work made it possible for me to enjoy all those Myst Related Ages in Uru itself, for my own Private use here at home.

Yes, if I pay the 10 bucks for MQ, then they get their money. Then yah, if someone figured out how to convert them so that you can load them up in Uru, yes, I could enjoy them in Uru........but again....WHY???? I would being enjoying them with MQ already.

Oh, and can I be trusted at that point? "Pssst. Hey Andy! He dude....man, could you do me a really, REALLY big favor? I heard you have the converted files for MQ....could you see your way in uploading them to me? Pleeeaseeeee???? I won't tell a soul. Really! Cross my heart!" And if I caved in, there's another 10 bucks lost....worse if THAT person then turns around and goes "Hey guys! I got the files, here's a link to down load!!!!!"

I really don't see the NEED to be putting MQ in Uru.....what I REALLY see a need in is Ages. Home Grown Ages, made for Uru, shards, whatever, that are Myst and D'ni related. Not MQ.

The tools that are constantly being refined are great.......but you ain't done yet. Is Drizzle done? Can it do EVERYTHING that can be done for Uru??? Will it be dropped to put MQ worlds in Uru??? That's sort of like dropping one project to jump on another. Are the plugin's done? Is everything going to be dropped and no more Ages made by people because they simply HAVE to have something that has NOTHING to do with Uru added to Uru???

yah, it will happen. Because people can't stand to be told "No. Please don't." And unfortunately even if the entire community showed up here to beg, plead and ask for this not to happen, it will still be done even in secret, and then that secret will get out, and then those people that don't want to pay their 10 bucks for one reason or another will be posting here and on other forums asking for the files to convert, or the converted files.

Where's MY details? Where's MY examples??? He dudes, it's all HERE, right HERE in this very forum. Or go over to the GoMa forum, or even MOUL's forum. Read all the posts. There are very good examples of people just going ahead and doing what they want, damn the concequences, etc, etc, etc. I don't need to list them, you just need to go back and read them.

I just hope that no one gets burned too badly from this. Some of you are the most brilliant people I've ever known.......and some of you are the most stubborn too.

Good luck.

This whole discussion is stupid. Some people are parroting the same lines after MOUL came out, and others seem to feel the need to preach to the people who have founded this site, what this site is about.

Do any of you fear mongers really think anything you say will stop anyone with the skills to do it, from converting the Magiquest files? Get off your high horses, soap boxes and podiums. No one who really understands this group cares what you have to say.

Yeah, resignation is the way to go. Right.

Of course people think that Dustin pays attention. Why not? He comes through as a reasonable guy.

And no doubt the MQ files have already been converted. But why release a tool so that all and sundry can convert them?

I think Drizzle is great. But for my part I do not want the functionality to convert MQ files. Will there be a version of Drizzle that I can use without feeling like I'm downloading a virus? I ask because I care.

And I'd rather have Dustin himself tell us that he doesn't give a damn about our petty concerns.

I'm starting to wonder how many people that are complaining about this even have a brain.

for one thing: I'm fully intending of signing up for MQ. I don't really give a flying feck-a-roonie about what MQ plays like, I don't /CARE/ if its online or not. I'll sign up, /and/ pay for it, since it is a one-time-fee deal-a-roonie, and I will happily convert it for Uru, and happily play the new data, and will happily enjoy it, and be proud of this, for I bought a game I will never play, only to utilise the datafiles in Uru. And, no, this will not cause cyan, or Creative Kingdoms any troubles, because I bought what I'll be using. And, should I, for example, put it on my family's shard: private, don't ask about joining. I will either sign up for them, paying for their usage of the content, hell, its a one time fee, why the hell not? or ask them to buy the content, before they can use the content on the shard. Sorry, but, your reasoning with the shards is.. well, rather silly. even the pelishard doesn't contain MystV/etc content in its downloadable files anymore. If you want to play with the fun happy new stuff, buy it.

To add to what others, BAD included, have said, this (guild of writers, that is) community was founded on the hacking ideals, that's how we have these lovely tools, like, say, PyPRP, they don't just drop from the sky, you know?

Note: I was not here for the founding, but, I've made it my business to research what I can find of the history of the community, I wanted to learn a little more of the background, as it were. =P

EDIT: I have a vauge question for those using the "Shard" argument, do you even know how shards work? As in, how /alcugs/ shards work?

Personally, I've set up MY shard such that the user needs to supply the content, so, if you want Myst5 content, well, you better damn well have converted it, hadn't you? same goes for crowthistle, and MOUL content, too. Don't see why I'd suddenly change this for MQ, honestly.

Again, the "torrents" argument. Get this, matey. There are no torrents for crowthistle. Trust me, I've looked. Maybe there might be now, but, hey, I spent a good year looking for torrents for crowthistle. Didn't find any. I went out a bought a book I'll never read, so I could get that content.

Sure, there are torrents of the MOUL content: Big frecking deal. That was freely available while MOUL was online, even to Vistors, you didn't need to subscribe to get that content, you never did. So, is anyone with an actual valid argument going to complain about it?
