Hello!

Anything that isn't directly related to Age Creation but that might be interesting to Age developers.

Hello!

Postby Crystal » Tue Jan 26, 2010 9:41 am

:D Hello, my name is Crystal and I am an avid Myst fan. It's been my dream to explore and create worlds long before I even knew the Guild of Writers existed. After hearing talk about this website I pondered whether I even had anything to offer these probably intelligent, skilled people. After all, I have absolutely no experience in the area of Writing. But, here I am! I guess my dream was stronger than my unfounded fears. :)

I'm going to read every tutorial made on Blender, and learn everything necessary to make my dream reality! Hopefully you all will find the patience to answer my newbie questions and guide me from making newbie mistakes.

Any links to tutorials or websites you think I should definitely see are most appreciated!

Thanks,

Crystal :D

Welcome Crystal! Don't forget, there's an extensive wiki here too. It'll come in handy, a lot. :D I look forward to seeing your contributions!

Welcome! I find that half the fun is in dreaming up an Age and drawing it on paper. For me personally, my favourite Ages tend not to be the most expertly made, so don't worry at all about how you compare to other Writers!

Make sure you first check out the wiki, before you "read every tutorial made on Blender".
You will find that you will only need to use a few of Blender's features in the course of writing Ages.
Learning other features would just be clutter.

Thanks for the tip Chacal. :) So far I've made several maps and sketches of the Age I have in mind and I found that to be very enjoyable as well.

Crystal,

Sorry to chime in again here, but seriously, listen to Chacal about the tutorials bit. Really... I can speak from experience here. The day I joined the Guild I thought it wise to watch/read/download/study every dad-gum tutorial I could get my grubby fingers on.

Bwaaahahahaha, the Blender Gods had fun with me! Big mistake! I spent a bunch of time making objects that looked great in Blender Render but were absolutely Worthless to my quest as a writer. Then, I had to go back, scratch out pages and pages of notes and start again. In hindsight, had I just gone to the GoW wiki first - I'd know less about Blender and more about writing ages. :? Er,... something like that. Either way, great advice Chacal! :D

Heh, I did have an Age called that, but I stopped working on it after the Great Cyan Clampdown of Twenny-Aught-Six. It involved running around the surface of a torus or some such thing. Actually, the avatar was stuck inside an invisible collider, and the Python code detected where you were running, and rotated and moved the entire world accordingly, so that it seemed like you were running along the surface ;) (Not multiplayer compatible.)
