Rand's visit and news for Age Creators

Postby GPNMilano » Tue Feb 09, 2010 9:40 pm

Okay, couple of things. I don't have a chatlog. Jamey's got one and will post soon.

But in no particular order:

1. Cyan's still working out issues on what models and textures we'll be able to use for age creation. But he did say that they're looking to make the process as easy as they possibly can for writers.

2. The ages will more than likely be approved by the guild of writers and maintainers, and Cyan will just over see how it goes.

3. Fan created ages in MOUL is the next priority on their list. They want to set up a kind of "Writer's Nexus" (My name for it not his) like the regular nexus, where links to fan ages can be kept. And they want the addition of the fan ages to be their next goal.

4. I semi joked about the Wall, and then said I know it isn't anywhere close to being finished and his response was "I'll look into it."
You can't stop the truth. IC Blog

I still think we need a Guild of Book Makers (engine coding) and Guild of Ink Makers (support tools) if this ever gets open sourced. I suppose neither of these items were mentioned in terms of fan created stuff.

(02/09 22:54:42) Sven: It's better than yesterday, the lag.
(02/09 22:54:50) Rand: We beefed up things - mainly on the front end
(02/09 22:54:54) Mister Cloak: yep. Tolesa was getting to be very difficult just before the server crashed lol
(02/09 22:55:00) Chloe Rhodes: We had less people in the city earlier and the server blew up.
(02/09 22:55:06) Chloe Rhodes looks at Cloak
(02/09 22:55:10) Romer Openfield: Lol
(02/09 22:55:11) Chloe Rhodes: You started the journey without me!
(02/09 22:55:14) Jamey: yeah, I've had no lag since I logged in a few minutes ago
(02/09 22:55:16) Sven: I've got access to a couple of server clusters here... I'd happily donate them if they were actually mine. :)
(02/09 22:55:19) Jamey: it's been well
(02/09 22:55:22) Jamey: :)
(02/09 22:55:30) Mister Cloak: yeah, sorry. You didn't tell me to wait for you :P
(02/09 22:55:41) Rand: We're actually experimenting with cloud stuff - to be flexible
(02/09 22:55:44) Chloe Rhodes: heh, it's okay, i've already collected half my gz markers
(02/09 22:55:50) Mister Cloak: lol
(02/09 22:55:59) Romer Openfield: what's cloud stuff?
(02/09 22:56:03) Marein: Rand: Some time after the servers opened up they went down again, and now they're up again - did they break again for that short time?
(02/09 22:56:06) Sven: That's a good idea.
(02/09 22:56:11) Rand: Cloud servers
(02/09 22:56:20) Tesseract: On-demand allocation of computing resources on a network
(02/09 22:56:29) Rand: I think just the Auth server failed and restarted
(02/09 22:56:37) Rand: Not sure though
(02/09 22:56:37) Romer Openfield: thanks
(02/09 22:56:39) Marein: Ah okay
(02/09 22:56:43) Dr CrisGer-: Happy Clouds hopefully
(02/09 22:56:47) Jeff Lewis: Maybe I missed it but, new avatar Rand?
(02/09 22:56:50) Jamey: It's working awesome for me right now
(02/09 22:56:51) Mystdee: that's where I had my problem getting in
(02/09 22:56:56) Rand: I don't understand all the magic - i just enjoy it
(02/09 22:57:00) Rand: :)
(02/09 22:57:02) Sven: What's causing the crashes actually. I'd expect the servers to be slow and drop requests under load, but not crash.
(02/09 22:57:04) Romer Openfield: Indeed
(02/09 22:57:08) Rand: Yes - my hair has grown
(02/09 22:57:12) Mystdee: we enjoy it too:)
(02/09 22:57:15) Green Dragoon waves hello
(02/09 22:57:33) No'ga: Is this the first MMO to be put on a cloud? I can't remember another one
(02/09 22:57:34) Jamey: The Uru community has still got it, lagging and crashing servers is what we've been used to at times :P
(02/09 22:58:00) Rand: The fans sure brought this cloud to its knees
(02/09 22:58:05) Jamey: Shows dedication, which I have no problem with :)
(02/09 22:58:06) Dr CrisGer-: hehe
(02/09 22:58:15) Mystdee: we are good at that :D
(02/09 22:58:17) Jamey: both to Cyan and Uru
(02/09 22:58:18) Romer Openfield: It's our job
(02/09 22:58:22) Tesseract: Just hope there are enough donations to cover the cost of the beefier servers. :)
(02/09 22:58:26) Sven: Who'd've thunk there was still so much interest in Uru? :)
(02/09 22:58:35) Romer Openfield: it's the community
(02/09 22:58:40) Mystdee: I never had any doubt
(02/09 22:58:57) Robbyn: Any idea how many have tried signing up so far?
(02/09 22:58:57) MatthewH: i sent a donation before i could create an account, I hope they can look back and link the two
(02/09 22:59:06) Dr CrisGer-: and a lot of new ppl want to come too
(02/09 22:59:10) Jamey: I will be sending a big donation asap
(02/09 22:59:20) Rand: I think a couple thousand have signed up so far
(02/09 22:59:25) Tesseract: As long as you got the avvie name you said in the donation there should be no problem, I think.
(02/09 22:59:26) Mister Cloak: I'm waiting until I am sure I can pay my bills before I make a donation
(02/09 22:59:31) Sven: I'm one of the new people, never been in Uru Live before.
(02/09 22:59:32) Romer Openfield: Lol
(02/09 22:59:33) Rand: I thought it would have been a couple hundred
(02/09 22:59:40) Romer Openfield: welcome, Sven
(02/09 22:59:42) Jolly: any idea on how much to expect in the following weeks?
(02/09 22:59:50) Robbyn: silly thought! ;)
(02/09 22:59:53) Rand: Welcome Sven!
(02/09 23:00:10) No'ga: Welcome to our humble cavern.
(02/09 23:00:12) Romer Openfield: better now than in a few years ago
(02/09 23:00:13) Rand: My estimates are useless
(02/09 23:00:15) Chloe Rhodes: Oh rand, have you not seen some of the Guild forums lol
(02/09 23:00:16) Rand: :)
(02/09 23:00:17) Jamey: There are many Uru fans on many different forums, not all of them are on MOUL forums, but once Uru launches they all come running :)
(02/09 23:00:23) Sven: Thanks, everyone. Great to finally experience Uru as it was meant to be, after all those years of playing solo. :)
(02/09 23:00:31) MatthewH: Sven, Welcome, how do you like it so far?
(02/09 23:00:43) Sven: It's awesome!
(02/09 23:00:44) K.Lord prods Marein
(02/09 23:00:45) Sven cheers
(02/09 23:00:45) Mystdee: we are glad you're here Sven!
(02/09 23:00:52) Dr CrisGer-: yes indeed
(02/09 23:00:53) Romer Openfield: i'm glad I'm here
(02/09 23:00:54) Rand: Sven, you've got a few new areas to explore
(02/09 23:00:57) Marein is prodded
(02/09 23:01:00) MatthewH: Always glad to see new people
(02/09 23:01:03) Dr CrisGer-: new explorers are the new life of the Cavern
(02/09 23:01:12) To Jeff Lewis: I gotta still join UO, can you help with that later? :)
(02/09 23:01:27) Romer Openfield: What can we expect from the Open Source side?
(02/09 23:01:29) Rand: Sven - I've got a few areas to explore myself ;)
(02/09 23:01:30) From Jeff Lewis: I'm not in it yet.
(02/09 23:01:33) K.Lord: Hey Rand, whilst you're here, I have a question for you that I know vid would want me to ask. Howcome all the hoods are now labelled as Bevin's instead of Neighborhoods?
(02/09 23:01:35) Dr CrisGer-: :)
(02/09 23:01:37) Sven: Yeah I've already seen a little bit of the new stuff, thanks to Jeff over there. :)
(02/09 23:01:53) To Jeff Lewis: oh :P lemme know if you find someone who is, and I'll do the same
(02/09 23:02:14) Jeff Lewis: Hehe :)
(02/09 23:02:14) Mister Cloak: Jeff is good people
(02/09 23:02:28) Rand: K.Lord: Hmmmm, "Bevin" takes less room on the Nexus machine
(02/09 23:02:36) Mister Cloak: I do have a question Rand
(02/09 23:02:43) Mystdee: good answer ;)
(02/09 23:02:46) Jamey: Hopefully, User Created Ages will come in time! I have a few ready to go.
(02/09 23:02:57) Rand: Yes MC?
(02/09 23:03:08) Jeff Lewis: Hey, I have a friend trying to get in with Win 7 64-bit. Any chance of him getting in?
(02/09 23:03:12) Chloe Rhodes: Me too.
(02/09 23:03:14) Rand: Cool Jamey - this is the start
(02/09 23:03:22) Tesseract: Maybe someone could tell us the D'no word for neighborhood. And it might be conveniently short! ;)
(02/09 23:03:22) MatthewH: Jeff: It works fine, im on W7 Ultimate X64
(02/09 23:03:23) Marein: Jeff: I have that
(02/09 23:03:25) K.Lord: Jamey> yes, I would love to see people wandering around Sul and Fahets
(02/09 23:03:50) Green Dragoon: I'm in Win 7 64-bit.
(02/09 23:03:50) Chloe Rhodes: jamey> and chloe's hood office and Eder Licinius
(02/09 23:03:50) Mister Cloak: Is there any chance of getting any "new to us" concept art released from the cyan vaults any time in the future?
(02/09 23:03:51) Sven: Me too, Win7 x64
(02/09 23:03:51) Jeff Lewis: Thanks, I'll tell him it's just him. :)
(02/09 23:03:51) Jolly: im currently running win7 64 bit
(02/09 23:03:57) Rand: MC: I'm not sure. Anyone know that? W7 64?
(02/09 23:04:09) Chloe Rhodes: And dorehn. and cripton, and...okay going to stop now.
(02/09 23:04:09) Rand: There you go!
(02/09 23:04:21) Jeff Lewis: Sorry, I lagged and inturrupted MC's question :P
(02/09 23:04:22) Rand: Those pauses are killers!
(02/09 23:04:26) Sven: Lag's getting worse again
(02/09 23:04:35) Jamey: The Writer's Niche, one of my ages, was meant for online play. I hoping it will be at it's full potential soon!
(02/09 23:04:43) Marein: The pauses are client-side though, aren't they?
(02/09 23:04:54) Marein: Not the servers's fault
(02/09 23:04:59) Marein: Right?
(02/09 23:05:05) K.Lord: I blame myst-bert
(02/09 23:05:10) Sven: I've never had any such pauses with the off-line Uru though
(02/09 23:05:11) Marein: Well obviously
(02/09 23:05:19) K.Lord: haha
(02/09 23:05:22) Jamey: of course :)
(02/09 23:05:30) No'ga: Im also W7 64!
(02/09 23:05:33) Jolly: im guessing that the lags being worked on?
(02/09 23:05:41) Sven: Windows 7 is popular, it seems.
(02/09 23:05:45) Jamey: I'm not going to complain about it though, being with you all is worth it in my opinion :)
(02/09 23:05:47) Chloe Rhodes: Rand. I just have one question
(02/09 23:05:50) Rand: Yeah - it's being added
(02/09 23:05:52) Romer Openfield: i'm amazed at how well we're doing here
(02/09 23:06:14) Jeff Lewis: Rand, Mister Cloak's question was about any new to us concept art. I lagged a bit and inturrupted.
(02/09 23:07:11) ghaelen: oh no, lag, lag
(02/09 23:07:14) Romer Openfield: have we hiccuped?
(02/09 23:07:22) Rand: Yikes!
(02/09 23:07:25) Rand: :)
(02/09 23:07:26) Marein: Bahro are still here :)
(02/09 23:07:26) ghaelen: shorah everyone and thank you thank you Rand!
(02/09 23:07:29) Chloe Rhodes: nope Romber. Just a bahro scream
(02/09 23:07:33) No'ga: Yep yay
(02/09 23:07:34) K.Lord: Bahros!
(02/09 23:07:36) Mystdee: uh oh hope that Bahro doesn' break the server ;)
(02/09 23:07:36) Romer Openfield: Lol
(02/09 23:07:49) Marein: Shorah ghaelen :)
(02/09 23:07:51) Sven: Well there's your problem! Bahros in the server. :)
(02/09 23:07:53) Rand: We have nothing new right now - but this is just the first step
(02/09 23:08:12) Mister Cloak: what I mean is old concept art that we haven't seen
(02/09 23:08:13) Marein: And it's great :)
(02/09 23:08:15) Rand: At least there is a place for new ages now - from us and you!
(02/09 23:08:17) Jolly: how does it feel to have so many fans, Rand? lol
(02/09 23:08:22) Jamey: every step counts, every long journey begins with one :)
(02/09 23:08:23) Mister Cloak: that stuff interests the heek out of me
(02/09 23:08:44) Rand: There more like fike friends Jolly
(02/09 23:08:48) Rand: They're
(02/09 23:08:50) Rand: :)
(02/09 23:08:51) ghaelen: wow
(02/09 23:08:58) Sven: Either I'm lagging like mad now or Yeesha is stopping time with her grower powers.
(02/09 23:09:01) Rand: Right Jamey
(02/09 23:09:08) Mister Cloak: lol Sven
(02/09 23:09:12) Rand: It's Yeesha!
(02/09 23:09:13) Chloe Rhodes: i'm going to keep asking this until someone in the know gives me a simple straight answer.
(02/09 23:09:14) ghaelen: Explorers have new things, Rand, new ideas, more Guild Restorations (like the Healers)
(02/09 23:09:21) Chloe Rhodes: where is the cake
(02/09 23:09:27) Jamey: ROFL
(02/09 23:09:30) Jolly: the cake is a lie
(02/09 23:09:32) Mister Cloak: the cake is a lie
(02/09 23:09:32) Dr CrisGer- starts to serve cake to all
(02/09 23:09:34) Tesseract: In the cafeteria. Duh.
(02/09 23:09:40) Romer Openfield: Mm
(02/09 23:09:41) Mystdee: Kodama ate it all! sorry,
(02/09 23:09:43) Jamey takes a piece :D
(02/09 23:09:47) Jolly: >.<
(02/09 23:09:49) Dr CrisGer-: Extra Frosting
(02/09 23:09:49) Jeff Lewis: The cake is a Muffincakes, and his other name is Gondar! Hi Gondar!
(02/09 23:09:53) Gondar waves hello
(02/09 23:09:56) Tesseract: On the shelf above the Fish Tacos.
(02/09 23:10:05) Sven: This cake is great, it's so delicious and moist.
(02/09 23:10:08) Marein: Hey Gondar :P
(02/09 23:10:12) Rand tries to hide the cake in his pocket.
(02/09 23:10:14) Mister Cloak: In my bevin vs Kirel map for tf2 I'm working on there will a hard to find reference about the cafeteria and the restrooms
(02/09 23:10:21) Jamey: lol! :P
(02/09 23:10:31) Chloe Rhodes: You are all now officially on my list.
(02/09 23:10:32) ghaelen tries to eat cake but hiccups and nearly chokes
(02/09 23:10:38) Marein: MC: As in, there will be no restrooms? That would be a Myst reference right there
(02/09 23:10:41) Sven: Your hitlist?
(02/09 23:10:42) Gondar: On your list? What list? That sounds ominous
(02/09 23:10:54) Robbyn: Never did find the restrooms...
(02/09 23:11:14) Tesseract: Down the hall from the cafeteria.
(02/09 23:11:19) Dr CrisGer-: big list
(02/09 23:11:23) Chloe Rhodes: Mister Cloak. heh, I actually started making a cafeteria this afternoon during the downtime.
(02/09 23:11:28) Mister Cloak: There will be signs down a blocked off hallway and yo'll only be able to read then by zooming in with the sniper cloak
(02/09 23:11:30) Gondar: Take a left at the cone supply closet
(02/09 23:11:31) Rand: I wonder how things are on the surface - how the wait is?
(02/09 23:11:45) Marein: MC: Hehe
(02/09 23:11:52) Dr CrisGer-: hopefuly Zandi left the Gate open
(02/09 23:11:52) Jamey: So, is there anything we can do to help Cyan out right now in addition to our donations? :)
(02/09 23:12:02) Mystdee: when I logged in it was speedy but not many were back in yet
(02/09 23:12:08) SeanMc74: No restrooms? That why we could never get the lake to light up.
(02/09 23:12:09) Mister Cloak: don't crash the servers would be helpful
(02/09 23:12:21) No'ga: Well my friend is getting to 0 seconds then hangs so far
(02/09 23:12:23) Sven: I think there's a line from the entrance in he volcano all the way to the Pacific Ocean
(02/09 23:12:38) Chloe Rhodes: Sven, don't you mean the atlantic.
(02/09 23:12:47) Jeff Lewis: I heard if you wanted to get in line you had to have a scuba license.
(02/09 23:12:49) Chloe Rhodes: atlantic's a bit farther away.
(02/09 23:12:55) Romer Openfield: or Gulf of Mexico
(02/09 23:12:57) Jolly: fair well Rand. i have not been down here in a while, and i feel i must reaquaint myself
(02/09 23:13:09) Rand: Jamey: The donations help - already we could justify beffing up the servers.
(02/09 23:13:28) Rand: Have fun Jolly
(02/09 23:13:36) Chloe Rhodes: rand, glad to hear that.
(02/09 23:13:45) Mystdee: :D
(02/09 23:13:54) Jamey: I will donate whenever possible then :)
(02/09 23:13:56) Rand: You guys are so generous!
(02/09 23:14:30) Chloe Rhodes: me too.
(02/09 23:14:33) Mister Cloak: We just want to see our home survive
(02/09 23:14:45) Mystdee: It is so worth every cent
(02/09 23:14:47) Chloe Rhodes: I think the Auth server's about to go down again.
(02/09 23:14:51) Gondar: Next step is fund collecting to buy Cyan another good batch of coffee.. late nights to fix a weeping server :-)
(02/09 23:14:51) Jamey: It's mainly because we love both Cyan Worlds and Uru, and want both to survive
(02/09 23:14:52) Romer Openfield: OKay, I'm being called. I"ll make room here. Rand, thank you much. Nite all!!!!
(02/09 23:14:57) Jamey cheers
(02/09 23:15:00) Rand: We will use the donations just for Uru!
(02/09 23:15:10) Sven: I'll try to find some money to donate as well, that'll be scholarship money well spent :)
(02/09 23:15:11) Rand: Thanks Romer!
(02/09 23:15:11) Mystdee: nice to see you Romer
(02/09 23:15:13) Mister Cloak: seeya ROmer!
(02/09 23:15:26) No'ga: later Romer
(02/09 23:15:35) K.Lord: Kehra says hi
(02/09 23:15:38) Rand: We're just as happy as you all to have Uru here again.
(02/09 23:15:53) MatthewH: back
(02/09 23:15:53) Gondar: If donations are just for Uru, there's enough cash incoming from other projects then to stay afloat?
(02/09 23:15:54) Robbyn: It's more than a home, it's a community. And this lets us get together better than any forum or email.
(02/09 23:15:59) No'ga: I pay $15 a month for wow so I will easily be able to move that over to URU
(02/09 23:16:00) K.Lord: she'd be joining us and bugging you Rand, but she's sick at the moment.
(02/09 23:16:03) Sven: It must like one of your kids coming home again for you, Rand.
(02/09 23:16:25) MatthewH: this may be a stupid question, but whats the likely hood that uru would run on a netbook?
(02/09 23:16:26) Mister Cloak: so many familiar names
(02/09 23:16:26) Rand: Gondar: The other projects are small - and they just have to support themselves
(02/09 23:16:38) Chloe Rhodes: i'm donating the same money i paid for gametap.
(02/09 23:17:13) Rand: Matthew: Hmmmm, don't know. Interesting.
(02/09 23:17:19) Tesseract: If the netbook runs other DX9 games, the odds seem pretty good.
(02/09 23:17:33) Dr CrisGer-: iURU?
(02/09 23:17:34) Gondar: Depends on the graphics card, from what I've heard.
(02/09 23:17:36) Dr CrisGer-: :)
(02/09 23:17:38) MatthewH: well its a GMA500 that supposedly can do H264 video deoding
(02/09 23:17:42) Rand: Thanks Chloe!
(02/09 23:17:46) MatthewH: i may have to try it sometime
(02/09 23:17:55) Sven: Rand, some people on the forum (who can't be here right now) are asking for your KI number so they can see if you're online in the future. Is it ok if I post it?
(02/09 23:18:00) Jeff Lewis: There's an app for that?
(02/09 23:18:01) Chloe Rhodes: dr CrisGer. I don't think the ipad could support IUru.
(02/09 23:18:28) Mister Cloak: The iPad is the single most unfortunately named device from apple yet
(02/09 23:18:31) Jeff Lewis: I'd be satisfied with just a KI to fuss around with on my iPod Touch.
(02/09 23:18:41) James Kaufman: whenever my tax refund gets here I'll be sure to set aside some for Uru
(02/09 23:19:05) Mystdee: Jeff, that does sound cool!
(02/09 23:19:06) Jeff Lewis: The next version is going to be the max version. It will be the "Max iPad"
(02/09 23:19:08) Rand: Sven: If you don't somebody else will :)
(02/09 23:19:12) James Kaufman: getting $2,000 and some change back this year, I can sacrifice some of that
(02/09 23:19:14) Sven: Ok, thanks :)
(02/09 23:19:53) Jamey: I don't have a big income myself, but I will donate whatever I can, either at once, or monthly :)
(02/09 23:19:55) Jeff Lewis: Mystdee, if you get in on the iPod KI, put in a good word for me :P
(02/09 23:20:06) James Kaufman wonders if he could count it as donating to a research foundation... :-P
(02/09 23:20:10) Mystdee: :)
(02/09 23:20:20) Rand: I want a KI app on my iPhone
(02/09 23:20:29) Dr CrisGer-: we do a lot of reseach down here
(02/09 23:20:34) Rand: my KI away from home
(02/09 23:20:36) Tesseract: KI twitter integration!
(02/09 23:20:40) Jamey: I'd love to see that as well Rand :P
(02/09 23:20:43) Jeff Lewis laughs
(02/09 23:20:48) Mystdee: that's what he was suggesting! I'll test for ya;)
(02/09 23:20:50) Jamey: There is a pod clock though
(02/09 23:20:51) Sven: KI for the iPhone would be awesome
(02/09 23:21:06) Jamey: Where you can tell when the portals in the pod ages open up
(02/09 23:21:16) Mister Cloak: I was actually working at one point on designing the circuit board for a functional Ki watch that could take pictures
(02/09 23:21:17) Time: Wow, taking a KI photo took me a good 3 minutes. ^_^ I'm so happy to be back!
(02/09 23:21:23) Gondar: Thee's an app for that Jamey
(02/09 23:21:30) James Kaufman: Don't forget about us Verizon people. Make a Droid version :)
(02/09 23:21:33) Jamey: I think BobLishman made the pod clock right? :)
(02/09 23:21:36) Tesseract: I am really looking forward to seeing the code so I can help make stuff like that a reality.
(02/09 23:21:58) Zib: lo all
(02/09 23:22:04) Gondar: Yo! Zib!
(02/09 23:22:05) Jamey: I just want to share my ages with you all :)
(02/09 23:22:07) Rand: We've talked about it - another one of those resource things
(02/09 23:22:09) Mystdee: Shorah Zib
(02/09 23:22:17) Rand: And of course Droid!
(02/09 23:22:19) Rand: :)
(02/09 23:22:22) James Kaufman: yay
(02/09 23:22:29) Chloe Rhodes: Rand, if you don't mind my asking. What's the status from legal on wether we can use some of the models and textures (Like imager's and nexus stations) in some of our ages. Will those be covered under the FCAL's.
(02/09 23:22:43) No'ga: Yep resources are everything at least it is up and running
(02/09 23:23:00) Jamey: I know they will be released under a different license than the code right?
(02/09 23:23:08) Mystdee: Shorah Murray and Sophia!!
(02/09 23:23:18) Rand: I think we are still trying to figure it out. We want to make age making as easy as possible
(02/09 23:23:18) Dr CrisGer-: Hi Sophia
(02/09 23:23:20) Dr CrisGer-: Murray!
(02/09 23:24:00) Gondar: On that note, any idea if fan ages wll end up on this shard, maybe later once stuff has settled down? Or will that still wait until open source?
(02/09 23:24:41) Murray: Boo Soapie
(02/09 23:24:51) Rand: Our goal is to get some ages from new writers in here. Maybe a special nexus for that.
(02/09 23:25:06) Rand: But that's what i want :)
(02/09 23:25:09) Chloe Rhodes: Gondar, since the only toool for age creation that's out there for fans is pyprp, and we haven't made it MOUL compatible yet, it won't be till the source comes out more than likely.
(02/09 23:25:11) Tesseract: Awesome. :)
(02/09 23:25:12) Gondar cheers
(02/09 23:25:17) Jamey: sounds amazing
(02/09 23:25:50) Mister Cloak: I hope the new nexus will be that nexus that is in Gahreesen
(02/09 23:25:50) Gondar: Aw, true Chloe.
(02/09 23:25:50) Rand: Yeah - this was our first priority - now we can take more steps on the open source
(02/09 23:25:50) James Kaufman: Man that photo took forever
(02/09 23:25:58) Tesseract: Makes sense.
(02/09 23:26:03) Jeff Lewis: Is that what the weird button that looks like a UI button was supposed to be in that texture? Access to something like that?
(02/09 23:27:01) Jeff Lewis: I saw a texture with a button that looked kinda like a sparklie a while back. Never saw it in-game though
(02/09 23:27:05) Jamey: One question about fan created ages, will they go through Cyan approval first? How will that work?
(02/09 23:27:25) Rand: I've gotta get going in a little bit - I'm gonna head to Minkata for some fresh air
(02/09 23:27:43) Gondar: Remember the Atrus goggles! Sand + eyes = bad
(02/09 23:27:52) Chloe Rhodes: heh gondar
(02/09 23:27:55) Rand: Jamey: I'm not sure if it will be through Cyan or through the maintainers and writers guilds
(02/09 23:27:57) James Kaufman: Rand, before you go, any update on the Greeter shirts?
(02/09 23:28:01) No'ga: Have a great time and don't get too lost :D
(02/09 23:28:10) Rand: The guilds would be great for that
(02/09 23:28:19) Jamey: Perhaps a combination of both the guilds and cyan working together Rand?
(02/09 23:28:22) Mystdee: yes I have had a tear or two myself :)
(02/09 23:28:27) Jamey: maybe both can be in close contact
(02/09 23:28:33) Rand: JK: I don't know about the greeter shirts - but I'll check on them
(02/09 23:28:40) James Kaufman: ok

(02/09 23:29:11) Jamey: If you can make it happen Rand, I'd be one happy Writer
(02/09 23:29:15) No'ga: Ty again and tell Chogon to get some sleep also Im sure he needs it.

(02/09 23:29:24) Jamey: make it happen
(02/09 23:29:25) Rand: Chloe: Gotta check on that :)
(02/09 23:29:35) Jeff Lewis: I think no matter who's putting the ages into the game, there could be like a rating system where you rate the overall quality and popularity of an age in the nexus. Kinda like youtube videos.
(02/09 23:29:49) MatthewH: That makes sense Jeff
(02/09 23:29:52) Sven: That would be a good idea, yeah.
(02/09 23:29:55) Green Dragoon: Yes, pass our thanks on to the rest of the Cayn staff for a wonderful job.

I see some great irony here... Cyan wants to put fan Ages on their MOUL server before releasing any source.

None of our Ages are compatible with MOUL.
None of our plugins are compatible with MOUL until Cyan releases theirs, or Blender 2.6 is released and PyPRP gets a major rewrite.

It's a perfect Catch-22 situation.

Not necessarily, there's also solution number 1. Dustin writes another tab for Drizzle that converts from POTS to MOUL and Cyan accepts that until the source is released they're stuck with us using Drizzle.

But what's the chances of that happening.

About as good as the server's running smoothly the first month.

Are the limitations known? What I mean is, do you know what makes them incompatable? Is is possible that the folks at Cyan have taken a shot at making some fan ages work (behind the scenes)?

I'm sure they can possibly convert them, themselves, but, again copyright would likely prevent them from doing so, and on top of that, they /probably/ also don't have a converter built. So, spare-cycles. That, and, I'm not actually that sure they'd pull it off that well.

I'd be more of a fan of doing it through Drizzle.

Basically, Dustin is probably the one who knows the most about how to make that kind of thing work. Possibly even more than anyone in Cyan currently.

EDIT: Sorry, let me clarify, this is all to my (limited) knowledge, gathered from listening to those who know much more than I do, so there is every chance that I could be wrong.

Anything that converts to MOUL needs to have an intricate knowledge of PhysX's binary compiled collision mesh format.
When converting from PhysX that data can be ignored, but generating it is an issue.

libPlasma already has tools to convert (reasonably well) between any Plasma 2.x formats... but the PhysX data is a point of failure.

Hmm, didn't think about that.

Well, my guess is that their next step in open sourcing then is the toolset for 3dsmax.

My guess, is if they want fan ages in MOUL first then it's going to go like this:

1. Creation of stable Cyan MOUL server
2. Releasing Plasma Toolset source
3. Finalization of Fan created age process (Including FCAL's, approvals, "Writer's Nexus" etc)
4. Releasing of the Server source so that fans can set up their own servers that can connect to Cyan's dataserver.
5. Releasing of the Client source code.
