'Boss fights' in Uru...

Postby CrimsonMatt » Fri Feb 19, 2010 11:18 am

So I have thes wacky ideas for boss fights in Uru...

Suppose in an age you come to a room with a big computer screen. When you enter it says the security system has been turned on, and all the door's lock. The screen will also have "health" counters for, say, the 'computer' and the 'intruder.' And then you'd have to play some sort of mini-game. Like maybe a bunch of switches in the room will light up in a certain order, and you've got to press them in the same order, or maybe the reverse order to make it harder. If you mess up the order, you'll lose some 'health' on the screen, and when you get the order right, the computer will lose health. When the computer's health reaches 0, the doors unlock, but when your health reaches 0, the floor will start to move away, revealing a floor covered in spikes, and the explorer will have to Relto out. If a lot of people enter before the door locks, they can work together, if some people get locked out, they can watch the 'battle' through a window. There could be some strategy involved, though; once defeated explorers come back, an explorer who got locked out could open a shortcut that lets them get right back to where they were, so you may want to leave someone outside.

ALSO how about if you come to a room with a grill flooring, and underneath is a malfunctioning device that sprays a toxic gas upward. Earlier, you could find a journal that says the gas makes living organisms panic and feel an overwhelming desire to escape. So if you get it, you'll panic link. So the device will move around under the floor and you'll have to avoid it. And I guess, I dunno, you've got to turn it off somehow.

Cute idea, huh?

To be honest, I like Uru exactly because it does not have that kind of... fight. It's a puzzle game, you can not die, you have as much time to think as you want, and if you get stuck, you can link out at any time and try another age or puzzle (if there's any left). Later on, you can continue exactly where you stopped. It' NOT an action game.

Don't let me stop you from doing what you want, but don't expect too much interest in that kind of age.

Well, there are SOME timed puzzles (Delin, Tsoghal, kinda the the gear room in Gahreesen). And you wouldn't die or anything, you'd just panic-link like if you fell. Maybe forcing you to return to the room isn't a great idea. But I mean Uru isn't JUST a puzzle game, there's the wall, there's heek, there's the marker games. I guess none of those things are REQUIRED, but then, nothing's really REQUIRED.

I'll grant you "interesting", maybe, but not "cute".
I'm sure the idea could be made better by removing the spikes and other elements of violence.

Haha, good point... I mean in Gira you could fall in lava, but that's not as gorey...
Yeah, a better idea would be if you just fell into a dead-end pit, or maybe just a previous room.

Very good point Shoggoth. Noone can say there is a lack of violence in Myst. Anyone who's read the books know's the D'ni world is full of violence. Not so much toward the explorer, but it's all over the canon.

Still , for me the charme of the game is the combination of its non violant environment, beautiful surroundings, a good storyline with creative and intelligent puzzles.
An environment where you make friends, and cooperate with friends of your choise, instead of fighting enemies or creatures.
An accident can happen but never fatal for the explorer.
A place where you can be happy, and where you help each other instead of making war.

In short,
.....its everything other MMO games do not offer.
Those wonderfull Worlds are called " Ages" , because that is what it takes to build one.
