Just to be clear, the rename wasn't prompted by anything related to Cyan or the Plasma Engine.

Rather, KDE has a library called libplasma. While there's no legal/copyright/trademark issues with this, it poses a problem if we ever make packages of libPlasma tools. On Linux, all package names are lowercase, and so "libplasma" is already taken by the KDE library. The name change also helps to avoid any confusion when referring to the library (in case you're a KDE developer who also writes Uru stuff :P)

libHSPlasma is a bit of a throwback to the origins of the Plasma engine, with the "HS" referring to HeadSpin, a company that developed the engine and then was bought out by Cyan in the early 2000s.

Chacal > I tried to come up with a cool word related to Plasma, and (having forgotten a lot of biology) ended up with "White Blood Cell". I think we can agree libHSPlasma is better ;)

Drove it temporarily underground, then? My attention to the project was rather sporadic then.

The old wiki with the "Don't post any more information" notice is still available on the wayback machine. It doesn't look like the forum posts that contained the actual Cyan note were ever preserved, though. (specifics omitted to protect those poor overloaded internet archive servers from the curious who weren't around all those years ago)

Another legal debate filled with someone's intuitions of how the law *should* behave? Why even bother :P

Edit: I should add that I'm not talking about everyone involved in such debates.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the issue you're (Dusting) mentioning here is the naming of libHSPlasma vs. Cyan's Plasma library used in their games, servers and tools... I can indeed see how this might be a problem, but then so is a lot of stuff we do at the GoW ;). I suppose I *can* consider renaming it again, but I've already discovered that renaming the library is a bit of a headache, both for the developers and for anyone who used previous versions :\.

Yes, exactly. And yeah, sometimes it just isn't worth the headache^^ If they complain first, you can always rename it in the future.

Are you referring to this (no anchor on the exact post, search for 01-26-2006, 04:45 PM)?

(Yes, I am one of the curious who wasn’t around (or didn’t pay attention) at the time, and no, I didn’t overload the poor archive.org servers today – I already did that when I was preparing this post :))

I dare someone to read that thread and give me a phone call :D

As I recall, Cyan told an individual person (was it RobertTheRebuilder? I can't remember now) to not post any information on reverse-engineering and to hold back on releasing more tools. They then made the wiki entries saying not to do any more. I.e., Cyan has never even asked me to stop doing anything directly.

From that old COBBS thread, it looks like it was ngilb120 who received word from Moke regarding Wiki content. He posts the letter later on below, with cat analogies and all.

The two links at the top of the thread point to grey dragon's original message on UO; the new post-UO meltdown link is here:

And grey dragon's response about the tools is here:

Can we rebuild it? Yes, we can - here's how.
