The intro paragraph that mentions the D'ni Art should be a clear signal about the nature of the site - not to mention that the banner art is a screen shot from "inside the cavern" - and yet some people miss the subtle things.

Actually, the OOC site has the same banner art. But I do agree that the "In Cavern" banner might be a bit much. It didn't come out the way I wanted :(

Also, I very carefully avoided red and black as main features of the site. Note that they are present, but I am not willing to make them a main point. They alienate too many people, unfortunately. It's too bad; red and black is my favorite color combination (Gooooooooo Dawgs!).

It's alright it's looking good, and it's not that I was against the banner it was just that it was about as subtle as a hammer... although some people need that. I can see it now.

Well the red and black could always be handled in small elements like thus;

The fact that you used Angelic War, alone, is reason enough for me to approve.
I wonder if the D'ni used wax seals of some sort? A red seal with the emblem of the nib on it would also do nicely for an accent.

The Tsar must admit that he is a programmer, not an artist.

Your talents would certainly be welcome. :) Would you have any specific direction in mind?
I like the slightly raw painterly look of your draft, it is a nice take on something that could be quite classical (books, paper, etc). The difficulty IMO is to find a look that's classy (hey this is the Guild of Writers right? ;) ) while not being too classical or too overdone.
Also, this being an IC site I thought some sort of reference to the D'ni culture might be in order. (but thenagain we quickly fall back on the whole books/paper/caligraphy drill)
Just my 2 D'ni cents. (?)
