Decals?

Postby N. Sigismund » Fri Sep 03, 2010 3:57 am

Does anybody know the best way of getting decals onto specific points of your model? The closest I've got is Andy's tutorial on stencils, but that applies the decal over the top of the entire texture. I want to apply a decal over the floor of a building in a specific place to add a nasty crack to the ground.

Make a png image of your decal preferably square some base 16 multiple like 512 x 512 use a graphics package to set the background colour as transparent.

Now make a plane in blender and give it a material with an image texture and load your png as the image.

make shure you get it the right way out so you can see the image and stick it in front of the object you want it to appear on.

make shure there's a gap between the decal plane and the object. you may have to faf around with the alpha to see it in the small window in buttons but it does work.

don't set triangular mesh it does not need collision thats dealt with by the object behind

If you want to see the effect go to enobmort all of the numbers are done this way. ;)

If you want to turn it or stretch it just manipulate the plane.

Blender advice isn't going to be much help I'm afraid, I'm doing this in Max. Thanks anyway!

Although... that would work fine if I adapted the technique to Max, if a bit fiddly. I'm wondering, however, if it's possible to have the decal and the main texture on the same model, rather than having the decal hovering very slightly over the model.

A darn site less fiddly than trying to get a texture in just the right position so that it only paints the object where you want it to paint.

I wish I was rich enough to afford 3D Max I have access but have spent so long on the Blender learning curve I need Oxygen. (and I'm still well short of the sumit).

The method is probably the best for both quicker to change decals and it's worked for plastic moddeling kits for well over 40 years. ;)
