Using the metric system?

If you feel like you're up to the challenge of building your own Ages in Blender or 3ds Max, this is the place for you!

Using the metric system?

Postby Aloys » Wed Apr 27, 2011 12:15 pm

Being European (or rather, not being American) I am used to the metric system. And doing the mental conversion imperial system > metric system when working on Ages is annoying and quite time consuming. I'd love to be able to work with PyPRP using the metric system..
Has anyone found a way to work with metric units in Blender and easily convert the whole Age to imperial units?
Currently manually doing the conversion is impossible. You'd need to individually scale each object before exporting, apply transformations where needed, etc.. And when you have hundreds of objects it's impossible; especially since you'd need to do it again for each new export.
I guess doing the math right inside PyPRP would be possible (scale each mesh according to world origin before applying modifiers). But I haven't given much though about how to insert it interface-wise..
One could also use a script before exporting but I haven't found anything like that in Google. :/
In Blender 2.5 there's a Unit management system (in the Scene buttons); so that could probably be used too.

Am I the only one who has a problem with that?

[edit] My brain must be fried right now.. One do not need to individually scale each object obviously. Just select all and scale away.. Still you need to do it before each export.

I don't use either system of measurement really. I just start every uru project with a cube scaled by 3 on the z axis. That is the standard size of an avatar. Hope this helps.

I'll take a look at the PyPRP2 code and see if I can't just implement it right now. ;)

Edit: This feature has been added
Currently getting some ink on my hands over at the Guild Of Ink-Makers (PyPRP2).

Important Announcement: Lontahv is in a feature implementation mood today, post your requests right now!

This thread was by no mean a feature request; so thanks implementing that one Lon! :) That'll certainly make my design and modelling easier..

Oow oow! Lontahv, can I get an "Easy button" added to the PyPRP code?

That's a nearly impossible feature request. :P I can only add what's possible. ;)

I just tested that in PyPRP2, and it seems to work like a charm! That might be a detail for many modellers; but that will make my modelling life easier. :)

By the way Standardsize for an Avatar in the old PyPRP and in the imperial system is actually 6 Units, ;)
