Which version of 3dsmax?

If you feel like you're up to the challenge of building your own Ages in Blender or 3ds Max, this is the place for you!

then perhaps it would be more practical to write a age importer for just tPots ages

im not sure why you would need to write a importer for MOULa age unless you wanted to import MOUILa age to MOULa :?:

The reason I'm exploring this is purely a learning experience. I want to see how an Age is put together and how possible/difficult to add something or remove something, perhaps put it back in a private shard somewhere and see how it looks/behaves. I realise if I were successful in this, I could never practically use it from a legal standpoint - but I just like to learn from it.

A while ago, I had little success porting in a pod age to Blender, but i could not get the textures with it and I gave up trying.

It was all just to satisfy a little curiosity....

I thought you talk about importing ages into 3dsm. I don't know what is more difficult, to write an importer for 3dsm or a direct converter from tPots to MOULa. But I think, if you simply want to import tPots ages to 3dsm to export them as MOULa ages, it would be easier to write a direct converter. But once again: I doubt anyone will take time for this in the near future.
