Apart from a Pen...

Postby Nek'rahm » Wed Jan 02, 2008 3:44 pm

What would the symbol of the Guild of Writers be?

Also, quick question, are any of our Ages being seen by Cyan as possible to put into MOUL?

Just wondering, cause I don't think they'll be more then just concepts until Cyan releases Age-creating software.

Thanks in advance ^_^

The pen symbol is the symbol the D'ni Guild of Writers used. However, pens, books, and ink all can symbolize writing.

I think it's safe to say that Cyan wants fan-written ages to become part of the Uru Live experience. How that may be implemented I don't know.

The tools being worked on/being used can put real Ages in offline Uru. I'd say that's a step beyond "just concepts". ;)

Right now we have had no communication from Cyan about precise plans for putting any Age into MOUL. There are some good ones out there but none of them seems ready to go into production, mostly because we still lack information on important features.

There is very, very little chance that Cyan will ever release tools for building Ages. It is not entirely impossible, but the sheer amount of resources needed is staggering. It is not even sure how Cyan will manage to provide enough resources to publish the documentation we need, or test fan-made Ages.

It is possible however that Cyan would release the tools it uses itself, which are 3DS Max "plugins". These could be used by a few writers knowledgeable in 3DS Max (or the even fewer who can afford it), or even better these could be analyzed and be the basis of complete specs for the Blender plug-in.

Okay.

Chacal building off what you said...

What if we came up with a ton of ideas, chosen by the Guild, to propose to Cyan as our best Age ideas.

This would push them to either:

A) Get us some better tools to make Ages with

B) Let us work on the Ages in Blender, then send them to Cyan for cultivating and finalization

C) Work on the Ages as part of MOUL themselves

Just an idea.

BTW: Thanks to all for helping me :)

About the symbols (Is this thread schizophrenic or what?): I'm not sure if we know the official symbols for the Book-Makers and Ink-Makers, but I would guess they would be a book and a beetle, respectively (although the book is not to be confused with the Maintainers' symbol, which is a book with an eye over it). I think the pen specifically is the Writers' only symbol.

Okay, you can go back to discussing Important Matters.

A logo for the GoW is an interesting idea. We don't have anything like that.
But we are not the D'ni GoW. IMO we shouldn't use their symbol; we'd need something different (something that reflects our surface-explorer nature).

Over at the Maintainers, we came up with this symbol that you can see in this thread here:

http://guildofmaintainers.org/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=29

Actually, Montgomery came up with it, and we all just liked it.

We kept the eye over the book symbol, partly because we like it, but also we felt that if Cyan didn't want us using the old D'ni symbols, why bother decorating the pubs with it? I have a feeling that if they wanted us to create our own symbols we would have been given a nudge somewhere.

Then again, it's purely up to y'all. I do love the way that you see the Maintainer's symbol all over the place at Gahreesen, until you walk into either of the conference rooms, where the lights are all decoed with the Writers symbol.

I actually got an idea a while back for a symbol that might work for us...

A sun with a crescent moon eclipsing the left side of it. At the bottom tip of this small symbol, a calligraphy pen pointed straight up, and from it's tip, two lines shoot out, going down diagonally. Then then end, and loop around, making the shape of an open book.

I dunno... just an idea.

Why not just use the Guild of Writers symbol, Cyan would have asked for a logo design (like they did with the Cartographers) if they didn't want you to use the old logo that the D'ni Guild used.

I agree - it's a good symbol.
