PlasmaMax compiling in Max 2011

Post by Branan »

Tsar Hoikas has gotten the Max plugin building in max 2011. It doesn't quite run right yet, but it's mostly working. We'll keep all of you max-using Writers updated on the situation, and you'll be the first ones to know when we've got something ready to test.

I'd also like to make a shout out to anyone with any older versions of Max between 8 and 2010. We need people who legally have access to the SDK to compile the plugin for those older versions of the software. You'll need sufficient computer skills to click the right buttons and type a few commands, but we can walk you through the process. This isn't an immediate need, since we're stilll working out some of the bugs on more modern max versions.

Don't you also require Visual Studio to get it to compile? I have the sdk for max 9, which should be good for 2008 as well. I may have access to 09 and 10 as well, I'll have to check that. So I would just need a compiler. I have VS 2010 Express...but I think you need a retail version.

We're working on getting things working with express editions. When thats all set it should work fine as long as the max SDK is compatible with the particular version of visual studio you use. Express 2008 and 2010 are still available, and if you still have 2005 it should work as well (though I don't think anyone has tested our code on VS2005).

Full versions will work as well of course, if you have access to them.

I'm glad to hear someone here has the Max 9 SDK. That's where several changes happened in the SDK, and I'd like to be sure PlasmaMax works on 3ds Max 9. :)

re Visual Studio:
Deledrius and I fixed everything to work on Visual Studio 2008 Express just recently. I've not tried Visual Studio 2010 Express though. Anyway, if you're a student, you might try getting a full version of Visual Studio from Dreamspark. I prefer the full version over the disconnected express products, but the express editions are great if you can't get the full version for free and don't want to hand over the cash 8-)

Wouldn't hurt to try it with Express 2010 see what happens. I'm not currently eligible for Dreamspark, but I'm thinking of taking some classes in the summer and probably could get in.

So what exactly do I need to do to try to compile this?
