General debates and discussion about the Guild of Writers and Age creation

Hmmm.... that got off topic for a while O_o

Err... (wonders if he should really be in GoW and GoMa... hopes BAD doesn't have a peeve) yea...

Back on track, all we can do right now is wait for April 4th. Once that comes around, we'll know for sure what (and IF) Cyan will do something.

Right now, coming from experience, let's leave the Guilds out right now. We'll pull all the Guilds together if WE have to do something. So let's keep all of this inter-guild involvement down to just what it is... nothing big like plans for a new URU. Right now all we can do is hope and wait.

I've been looking at building "My" Age for months now, I don't know anyone in MO:UL that at one point or another hasn't thought about building their own Age. I wanted to pass on a URL that I stumbled across. ( http://www.gameblender.org) Currently there are three projects going to add network capability to the blender game pack, two of which I've had a chance to play with and already have rudimentary server code already running.

EDIT : Sorry pizza was ready had to go get it. <MUNCH><MUNCH><MUNCH>

Anyway it's just a thought that staying with a GPL project we already use (Blender) could be a good thing. Cyan already has it in the fan license that you can't profit from it so GPL seems logical. Anyway butting out now, never enough time in the day.

Not sure if this goes here or not, but my initial age idea, Basden, was a library age for player created ages.
The initial link in was a rocky seashore. The puzzle to get to the underwater facility was in a cave up a small rocky hill. There would have been a large meeting place , out in the open under the trees. The facility itself was a multi storied underwater studio. The top floor held the finished ages, so everyone could have accesss to them. Each level down held a different guild. Of course, the guilds could be forced to share a floor depending on how deep the lake was. Anyway the bottom floor was the writers, then the maintainers, then the cartographers, and finally the greeters could have first look at the completed and tested ages before release to the public.
I was told we could not and probably would never be able to create library ages, so this was shelved. If you would like to have the rest of my ideas about this age, just let me know.

I think we should start with a big static city. :) Puzzles need scripting and this city will be buggy enough anyway without piles of code for puzzles plus sdl-type things. Let's start simple, that means a big city with no puzzles in my opinion. :)

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here, let's not build expectations. The most I really hope for is a static city with some avatars floating around--I hope it's more though. Getting there is half the fun, right? :P

Woah, this site is really good; http://www.gameblender.org thanks for telling me about it. :) I think I found what I was looking for. I think that ol' server and the data transfer should really be written in python--if no one else wants to use python then I'll take care of the whole thing(transfer and server). ;)

I've played around with a few ideas for the design of the city for d'nay and came up with a few points and questions;

To make it feel nice and sheltered we're going to need to have houses(the dn'i hoods have them) and instead of having empty houses what about having people live in them. :) It would be like AhraPahts except that the outsides couldn't be changed and the space would be smaller. People could change the inside of their houses.

Here's a something to think about before designing the city; will there be vehicles? If so the streets should be bigger. I think there should be cars. :) I think that it would make everything better. The city could be bigger and easier to get to places in the "country" I'm thinking that land will be very important in D'Nay it will be what you build on if you don't want to have to make an age. But here's the catch. With AhraPahts people can just sign-up for shells--having a shell means nothing which mean that they're not a desirable and then people don't work on them. I'm not saying I want there to be money here but it would make some things things work better. Here's an example;

Say there's a pile of people who are really good at making clothing, do they start a free avatar clothing stand where people come and then pick up what they want and leave.

Now imagine if there was money;

This pile of people make their "house" in the city into a store where they can sell their work to people.

The hours of guild work would pay, and the money to pay the guild people would come from taxes on commerce. If you didn't like it you could make your own stuff and you wouldn't have to deal with it. Only people who wanted to be part of this would have to deal with it. This would make it so there could be "Shops" on a small street. And this would make being able to model well a skill that would pay. :) This would also build a more life-like community. I really am not suggesting this because I want it to be like SecondLife. :P

Glad you like the site Lontahv.

On a different note......

I have been toying with the idea of doing a Fan Age Torrent for a long while. Finally got serious and stripped out a few Ages from my install to try it with. Hope no one minds.

Just something to try as the whole peer to peer thing is what people dream about to keep any Fan run effort from nuking the as yet unbuilt Fan server.

The link below will give you a standard torrent file usable by any torrent program you care to name, I'll leave my computer and torrent software running till Saturday barring any freak power outages. All of the files are zipped by age and separated out into the folders you should dump them into in your Uru Install.

This is more or less just a test of the whole p2p idea not anything serious as the ULM software offers a much more direct way to do things. But please if you decide to try it make a note of how long it took to download the Age or Ages you wanted out of it.

http://www.drivehq.com/folder/p3473531.aspx

Have fun and feel free to pass the torrent around to anyone who wants it.

In the torrent
Aerie
AhraPahts (Older version but has been stable for me)
Andysoffice2
CampBravo1
Janga
JangaLela
KatosLab
Paahkweh1
Paahkweh2
POTS_Flymode
TaklaMakan
Vaiskor

I really don't like the idea of money in D'Nay. Vehicles I think we should have though. :) Sorry for the double-posting. :P
