The "no-texture bug" strikes again

Postby di gama » Mon Jul 14, 2008 1:28 am

I don't know about you guys, but I have been seeing the "no-texture bug" a lot since I got back into Age writing. For any of you who don't know what I'm talking about, recall the time during MOUL when all of the textures went away in the city (very well publicized, as I recall). The difference for me is that (A) this occurs everywhere, in every age, (B) it's very difficult to get rid of, and it won't go away without restarting the client (oftentimes even this doesn't work), and (C) in addition to lack of textures beyond what I think is vertex coloring, there are also weird "disco light"-style lines and patterns flashing and changing in many places. I am wondering if any of you have had experience with this bug, and (hopefully) if any of you know what I am doing which is causing the problem.

Looks like either a videodriver or videocard issue. I would reccomend uninstalling your video driver, using something like drivercleaner to clean things up, and re-installing the latest drivers for your card. If that doesn't fix the problem, then it may be your card failing.

Does this happen only in Uru? Or do you have problems with other games/programs also?

Ouch, it looks like you are having a hardware issue with your video card. This kind of things usually happen when your video card is either dying or overheating a lot.
What kind of video card do you have?

The 'no texture bug' was indeed a bug, but it happened long ago, it has been fixed in Uru:CC as far as I know. What you have here doesn't seemed to be cause by Uru.

I had this happen to me once when I was still using some intel-(wonky-as-hell-with-uru)-onboard-graphics. :P

Also, the textures flickered all the time with my intel graphics. (not as bad as ours though,it was playable)

I'd suggest uninstalling DX9c and using 9b this fixed the problem almost completely for me (the minor constant texture-problems).

I also think that this bug could be caused by faulty sys mem if you have onboard graphics.
Currently getting some ink on my hands over at the Guild Of Ink-Makers (PyPRP2).

Funny, it happened to one of my friends which also had an intel board :) (an old i740) which almost died because of too much Quake3. :p
It turned out the card was overheating a lot and the fan was actually falling down (it had no actual screws or any attachements, just plain silicon paste) so he ended up somehow locking it in place with a toothpick  (needless to say after a while he had to change the card..)

I actually have DX10 on a Vista Premium, and by video card is an NVIDIA GeForce 7000M / nForce 610M. I can't really say I've never had problems with it though, because I started writing ages as soon as I installed Uru on this computer. (It's a new laptop, so it has Vista and a crappy video card.)

EDIT: I forgot to mention that sometimes it will flash all the textures as they're supposed to be for a single frame of animation, then go back to the non-textures, which leads me to believe that Uru is actually finding the textures, but there is a problem somewhere else. (I never thought it could be the graphics card, though... and it's not like I can replace this one.)

Since you are using Vista, here is something that might help.

1. Right click on the Uru desktop icon and choose properties
2. After the next window opens, click on compatability mode
3. Choose XP SP2
4. Click OK

Lower down in the same window will be a place where you can choose to run as administrator. Put a check in the box and close the window.

Start Uru and see if it helped any. If it did, then good deal! :D If it didn't, then I don't know! :(

No, that doesn't work... but it works on another computer (a desktop machine). I am inclined to believe that it is indeed a graphics card issue. Having said this, are there any settings or things which will allow me to run it without killing my GPU?

EDIT: The obvious solution (lowering the graphics options at the setup screen) appears to work fine. Unless I or someone else note problems with this solution, I would recommend adding this to any relevant troubleshooters.

I'd just start at the lowest in-game graphics settings to see if that corrects the problem. If it does; move them up from there. urusetup.exe, I think? My Windoze machine is in surgery so I can't verify.
