How do you make stuff transparent?

Postby Whilyam » Mon Dec 08, 2008 3:05 pm

Alright, I have light glares, partially-transparent clouds, plants, etc. I play with the settings but whatever I do, something always draws over something else or draws over itself. What's the proper setting to just get everything with the transparency I set in the image?

welcome to the world of .... PassIndex ... and what a nightmare world it is.

Basically, you have to try and work out what gets drawn in what order ...and give it the correct PassIndex value ... it's a bloody nightmare!
when it comes to Age creation ... "DOH" seems to be my middle name...

Nightmare is a good word for it! I am building aquarium for Pahts which in my design requires a LOT of glass therefore transparency. And I can't get it to work. I've tried several different passindex settings one of which made a real mess of things. I can see the effects in blender fine but when I export it to CC it just doesn't work.

As y'all have said, it's a nightmare.

Passindex isn't the only thing. If you have that many things that need it, you are going to need to play with the Zoff's in the Materials tab for each thing.

That's one reason I don't have all those plants near my creek in Bahvahnin. It was causing a CTD, no mater how I set the passindex. So instead, most of the plants had to be moved towards the canyon walls.

It's the plugin. No one is really working on it. They 've been too busy with......."other" things I'm afraid. Ah well.

My issue (mostly) is that the one texture (a light glare) is cutting through one texture consistently (one with no image alpha, only vertex blending).

This certainly should be one of the areas revised in a new plugin and spelled out on the wiki.

Try turning on the ZTransp button for the lamp glare material.

And that worked. So what are the proper settings? ZTransp I thought had been disabled in the latest version of the plugin just like Zoff. I thought the settings were the "Transp" button on the object panel and setting the Passindex. Is it ZTransp + Transp now?

I'm back with more waveset/transparency fun!

I have two objects. A waveset mesh and a shoreline mesh (not an actual animated Noloben-like shoreline). the shoreline mesh uses a texture with alpha. When I load the age in Uru, the waveset draws over the shoreline.

Shoreline mesh has one UV tex, has the Transp and ZTransp settings on, passindex of 5, and the texture has MipMap, Interpol, and UseAlpha set.

Waveset mesh has no UV tex, has neither Transp nor ZTransp on, pass index of 1, and no texture.

These are the same settings used in Bimevi's pond+shoreline, which works fine. What am I doing wrong?

Hmm... does the shoreline intersect with the waveset mesh (even if it's a very small area - and even if this area is invisible/hidden somehow)?
Intersection could cause problems, because URU's rendering engine cannot decide which object has to be treated as "in front of" the other.

(And transparent objects combined with wavesets behind are still a nightmare, don't ask how many hours I sat in front of this crazy stuff, getting headaches... )

The shoreline is above the waveset by a small distance.
